Whistler's Environmental Charity since 1989

AWARE is a member driven charity that has worked since 1989 to protect the natural environment in Whistler and the Sea to Sky through advocacy and speaking up about key environmental issues, while empowering others to do the same through science-based research and education. We work towards a vision of a knowledgeable community that is engaged and empowered to preserve and enhance the environment on which it depends.

What if fundraising was easier than you thought?

You don’t need a huge event, a massive budget or a complicated plan. You could host a bake sale, donate a portion of sales, organise a staff BBQ, run a raffle, or simply ask for donations instead of birthday gifts.

Big or small, every fundraiser could also help protect Whistler’s environment 🌄

We’ve created a Fundraising Toolkit packed with ideas and practical tips to help you get started.

Have an idea? Let’s make it happen.

Did you know that not everything labelled "compostable" can actually be processed in local composting facilities?

For single-use food and drinks containers, look for the 👊 BPI compostable logo 👊. You can place these, any any food scraps they contain, straight into the ORGANICS waste stream, as it it fully compostable.

If you don't see the BPI logo, clean it out and place it in the CONTAINERS stream. It isn't compostable in the BC facilities but it can still be recycled.

Read our latest blog post to learn more about where different waste streams end up on our website.

If you work in a hotel or restaurant, we can help you understand more about what goes in your organics bin through our From Waste to Action program.

The Valley Trail connects all Whistler's neighbourhoods from Function Junction in the south to Emerald in the north, passing through the Village, Upper Village and Creekside, as well as other residential areas on the way.

It's not just for enjoying in the summer though! Whistler already has the systems in place to support year‑round cycling. From the Valley Trail snow clearing in the winter, lit night routes, sheltered bike parking, and transit bike racks, make these sustainable habits last and cycle all year round.

Plastic bags. Chip bags. Pouches. Overwrap.

A lot of these flexible plastics can be recycled in B.C. ♻️ But not in your regular recycling bin.

Did you know, flexible plastics have their own recycling stream in B.C.?

Here in Whistler you can use a the dedicated flexible plastics bins. Look for the pink signs!

The rule of thumb? 👇

If it’s plastic, flexible and packaging - check before you chuck it.

Just make sure it’s empty, clean and dry.

And remember: not everything that looks like plastic is recyclable. Compostable packaging, garbage bags, cellophane and plastic-lined paper are some of the items that don’t belong in the flexible plastics stream.

♻️ Not sure? Check Recycle B.C.'s Waste Wizard before it goes in the garbage.
