The Loggerhead Shrike is also known as the “Butcher Bird.” It is smaller than a robin, but it is a ferocious predator! It preys upon mice, frogs, lizards, insects or even garter snakes! Since it is so tiny, it will impale its prey on thorny bushes or barb wire fences to enjoy its meal. Loggerhead Shrikes can live in many habitats like agricultural lands, riparian areas, prairies or even golf courses or cemeteries. Look for them along mowed roadsides or along fence lines. Because of our increased use of pesticides, Loggerhead Shrike Populations in North America are in steep decline. In Saskatchewan, they are considered a Threatened species.

🦌 Leave Wildlife Wild 🐻

Wildlife is best enjoyed from a distance. Feeding, approaching, or handling wild animals can cause stress, alter their natural behaviors, and put both people and animals at risk. Keeping wildlife wild helps ensure they stay healthy, safe, and thriving in their natural habitat.

📸 Snap a photo, not a selfie.
🚫 Never feed wildlife.
↔️ Give animals plenty of space.
🌿 Respect their habitat.

Remember: A wild animal that becomes comfortable around people is often at greater risk of injury, conflict, or removal. The best way to protect wildlife is to admire it from afar.

If you care about wildlife, leave it wild.
