🍎🥕🤝 Community Support Needed! 🤝🥕🍎

Helping Hands Pantry is currently working toward becoming a recipient of food rescue donations through Second Harvest, helping us provide more food to individuals and families in our community while reducing food waste. 🌎💚

To help move our application forward, we are seeking support from one or more local businesses. Specifically, we require a local business manager or representative to sign a formal request letter demonstrating community support for our participation in the program. 📝🏢

If you own, manage, or represent a local business and would be willing to assist, or if you know someone who may be able to help, we would love to hear from you! Your support could make a meaningful difference in expanding access to food resources within our community. ❤️🍞🥬

🚨 Nova Scotia is failing too many people! 🚨

The 2026 Poverty Report Card gave Nova Scotia failing grades in key areas related to poverty and food insecurity. Despite rising food costs, housing costs, and the growing number of families struggling to make ends meet, our province received an F in poverty measures and a D for the overall experience of poverty.

Food security is not a luxury—it is a basic human need. When people cannot afford groceries, the impacts reach far beyond hunger, affecting health, housing stability, mental well-being, education, and community participation.

The report highlights what many Nova Scotians already know —
‼️ Too many individuals, seniors, single parents, and working households are being left behind ‼️

Meaningful action is needed to strengthen income supports, invest in food security programs, and address the root causes of poverty 👏🏻

📢 📢 No one in Nova Scotia should have to choose between paying the bills and putting food on the table — the evidence is clear & the time for action is now!

We were contacted by Sam after our Spring-tastic Giveaway in Westville; and of course, we couldn’t give up the opportunity to share some information with our local communities! 👏🏻

We had a great time hosting the event, seeing lots of friendly faces and we are SUPER excited to start planning our next event! 🎉

Thank you to Westville Legion Branch #35 for hosting, Creative Pictou County for setting up an awesome crafts table, Global Pet Foods Pictou County - Stellarton for donating pet food and providing a coloring contest, The Final Touch Party Rental in Stellarton for donating the cotton candy machine, Farmstore for the delicious sausages, Elmacres Homestead & Candace Fergerson for the great deal on fresh eggs — the list of thank yous is endless & we are thrilled to have had the chance to work with such great local businesses! 🤗

🌱 Springtastic Food Distribution Wrap-Up & Important Update!

Hey everyone! We want to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed, shared, and attend our event today! Thank you to the Westville Legion Branch #35 for hosting 👏🏻

It was wonderful to see so many families, and the kids seemed to have a fantastic time! We successfully distributed fresh meat, produce, and bakery items, and we are excited to start planning the next event!
The BBQ was also a major hit—we hear you, and we’ll definitely have more hotdogs next time! 🌭

🎨 A special thank you to Creative Pictou County for the wonderful rock painting and colouring table!

🐾 Thank you also to Global Pet Foods Pictou County - Stellarton —we will announce the winner of the colouring contest as soon as they are chosen!

⚠️ An Important Note About Event Guidelines ⚠️

While we love serving our community, we need to address some disappointing behavior from today. These events are meant to be inclusive and welcoming for everyone. We purchased more than enough fresh food for the number of people who attended, and we should not have run out by 12:30 PM.

To ensure our events remain safe, fair, and positive for all, we are implementing the following rules moving forward:
🚫 No Early Arrivals: If an event is scheduled from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, please do not arrive at 11:00 AM. Our team needs this time to set up and organize without distractions or safety hazards while children are running around.

🤲 Respectful Sharing Only: We learned that some attendees were pushing, grabbing, and taking far more than what is considered a reasonable amount. This is incredibly disheartening.

👀 Monitored Distribution: Because of today's events, we will now strictly monitor the food distribution tables. Excessive hoarding and disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated.

We are incredibly grateful for the support of our community, and we want to keep these events running smoothly. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping this a kind, fair, and safe space for all of our neighbours. 💚
