Depuis plus de 35 ans, CanSupport des Cèdres améliore la qualité de vie des patients atteints de cancer du CUSM, et celle de leurs proches. Le personnel et les bénévoles de CanSupport des Cèdres assurent une présence auprès des patients et de leur famille, à une période de leur vie où ils sont le plus vulnérables, en leur tendant une main et en leur prêtant une oreille attentive. Tous les programmes et services de CanSupport des Cèdres sont offerts gratuitement, en français et en anglais :

• Soutien psychologique
• Aide financière
• Services éducatifs
• Thérapies complémentaires (yoga, massothérapie, méditation, art-thérapie
et musicothérapie)
• Groupes de soutien et activités sociales
• Ateliers de soins de beauté et de soins de la peau
• Perruques et turbans offerts gratuitement

Cedars CanSupport has been improving the lives of MUHC cancer patients and their loved ones for over 35 years. Its staff and volunteers assist patients and their families when they’re at their most vulnerable, with a helping hand and a listening hear. All of its programs and services are offered free of charge, in English and French. They include:

• Psychological support
• Financial assistance
• Educational services
• Complementary therapies (like yoga, massage, meditation, art therapy, and music therapy)
• Support groups and social activities
• Beauty and skincare workshops
• Free wigs and turbans
• A resource centre that provides information about cancers, treatments, and external resources.

It was standing room only at today’s Cedars CanSupport Lunch & Learn. We sincerely thank Professor Jeremy Howick for delivering an insightful and powerful presentation about the role that empathy plays in improving patient outcomes and satisfaction, the wellbeing of healthcare providers, patients and caregivers, and even healthcare spending!

There were over 70 people in attendance, including physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, Cedars CanSupport volunteers, patients, and caregivers – not to mention 30 guests online.

La salle était comble lors de la conférence-midi de CanSupport des Cèdres aujourd’hui. Nous remercions sincèrement le professeur Jeremy Howick pour sa présentation à la fois éclairante et percutante sur le rôle de l’empathie dans l’amélioration des résultats et de la satisfaction des patients, du bien être des professionnels de la santé, des patients et des proches aidants — et même des dépenses en santé!

S’appuyant sur sa vaste expérience en tant que fondateur du Oxford Empathy Programme, de l’organisme Global Network for Empathy in Healthcare, et du Stoneygate Centre for Empathic Healthcare, le professeur Howick fera valoir avec force que l’empathie devrait être davantage utilisée comme un outil très efficace, mais souvent sous-exploité, dans la médecine moderne. This is the second time that Cedars has had the privilege of hosting Professor Howick: in 2023, he was the inaugural Gwen and Tom Nacos Visiting Professor in Supportive and Palliative Care.

Benoît St-Amant is an outgoing, energetic, and incredibly positive 57-year-old father of two who is passionate about long-distant cycling and backcountry skiing.

He also happens to be battling cancer for the fourth time since 2008.

In 2008, Benoît took part in our “Cedars Tour de Lance” fundraising event for cancer research. He had recently been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and was delighted to meet his idol, Lance Armstrong. He wasn’t strong enough to complete the race, but he did get some invaluable advice.

“Lance told me: ‘Ben, even if you feel terrible, don’t quit. It’s important to get up, put on your cycling gear, get on your bike, and just ride, even if it’s only for one or two blocks,’” recounts Benoît. “So, that’s exactly what I did, and it’s that advice – to never give up – that still motivates me today.”

Benoît was well enough to take part in the 2010 Tour, and he raised over $25,000 for the cause. “I did it because cancer research literally saved my life. If I had been diagnosed 15 years earlier, I would have died,” he explains.

Benoît’s lymphoma returned later that year, but, happily, he went into remission, and his health remained good for another eight years. Unfortunately, his health started declining again in 2018. This time, he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia – or CLL. Thanks to a targeted therapy, Benoît once again went into remission and got his life back.

Then, this past February, Benoît’s cancer stopped responding to his medication. “But, thanks to research and clinical trials, there has been great progress in the management of CLL,” says his hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Pierre Laneuville.

After being hospitalized for two weeks for intensive treatments, Benoît is now back at home, responding well to chemotherapy, and feeling much better.

Benoît has been an inspiration to us since 2008. We hope that you, too, are inspired by Benoît’s story and that you will consider making a donation to Cedars today.
