Since 1976, 25-30 Montreal area stroke survivors have been meeting weekly in a safe and caring environment that supports a healthy recovery. Audrey worked as a physiotherapist at the group’s original meeting place, the Constance Lethbridge Rehabilitation Center. She recognized early in her career that there was a lack of services available for Montreal’s stroke survivors after they had been discha
rged from the hospital, and set out to create a peer support group that could fill the gap.The group has become a next step in the recovery process for survivors who have completed their active rehabilitation. Members are referred from hospitals, rehab centres, occupational therapists and social workers. The Montreal Stroke Club currently meets every Wednesday morning. A speech therapist comes in, along with an art teacher and members have the choice of working with either, or simply socializing. The art teacher incorporates a number of different arts and craft activities, like beading, sewing and painting. These activities serve a dual purpose, helping members relax and have fun, while also stimulating the brain and working the stroke survivor’s affected side. “We really strive to create a warm, understanding environment where new friendships can be formed and people can learn to cope with the changes in their lives after a stroke,” says Audrey. “The recovery process after a stroke is long and continuous. The Montreal Stroke Group offers a nurturing environment that is supportive and full of laughter – which can only help people in their recovery,” she continues.
