Some knowledge is carried through stories. Some is carried through practice. Some is carried through food shared at the table.

For the Nuu-chah-nulth Youth Warrior Family, returning to seal harvesting is about reconnecting with cultural knowledge, strengthening community ties, and making sure land-based skills continue for future generations.

Through NRT’s Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty Program, this work supported community members in harvesting seal in their territory and sharing a meal with people who had not eaten seal since the 1970s.

This is what food sovereignty can look like when it is led by community priorities: land-based learning, cultural knowledge, intergenerational connection, and food systems rooted in place.

The Warrior Toolkit is also available as a resource to help communities share land-based lessons, skills, and knowledge in ways that reflect their own priorities.

What does Nation building look like when communities define the work for themselves?

For every Nation, the answer is different. That is why NRT’s Nation Building Grant is designed to support Nation-led priorities.

This grant supports BC First Nations as they strengthen governance, build capacity, and advance the work they have identified as important for their communities.

Nation building can include work connected to self-determination, policy development, community planning, leadership, administration, and the systems needed to support future generations.

Applications opened May 15, 2026 and will remain open until funds are exhausted or December 1, 2026, whichever comes first.

What does it mean to hold a fund for seven generations?

For NRT, it means thinking beyond one application cycle, one program year, or one funding stream.

Lisa Paull shares how NRT works with partners, foundations, and government to move resources into community-defined and trust-based programs that support BC First Nations priorities.

This work is rooted in relationships, respectful delivery, and the understanding that Nations know what their communities need. NRT’s role is to help resources move in ways that are clear, accountable, and guided by the people doing the work on the ground.

Partners choose to invest through NRT because of the systems, governance, and relationships that help funding reach communities effectively and respectfully.

A fund for seven generations means supporting the work Nations are leading today, while keeping future generations in mind.
