So sad!

Dan Gallant
May 26, 1945 – December 28, 2025

Members of the Rotary Club of Port Moody are saddened by the passing of Dan Gallant, who died on December 28 from injuries sustained on December 23.

Few have embodied the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” as profoundly as Dan.

Dan Gallant began his Rotary journey in Saskatoon in 1980, where he later served as club President. His banking career took him to Victoria, Burnaby, and Vancouver, where he remained active in local Rotary clubs. He joined us as a member of the Rotary Club of Port Moody in 2002. Beyond Rotary, Dan served on boards including Crime Stoppers, the University of Victoria Coop Program Advisory Council, and the University of Victoria Foundation Board.

After retiring as Vice President of TD Bank Group in 1999, Dan Gallant deepened his commitment to service through Rotary World Help (RWH). Witnessing firsthand in Africa the impact of donated medical supplies, he became the heart and soul of RWH. With his vision and tenacity, RWH has already delivered over 475 shipping containers of medical and educational supplies—valued at more than $166 million—to 61 countries, touching an estimated 15 million lives.

Almost every weekday, Dan Gallant could be found driving the RWH truck throughout Metro Vancouver and beyond, collecting supplies. He became an expert at dismantling hospital beds, assessing wheelchairs, and matching medical equipment with clinics on distant continents in need. His tireless efforts kept the RWH warehouse full and connected Canadian donors with agencies worldwide.

On weekends, he joined fellow Rotarians and volunteers to load containers destined for every corner of the globe. Dan Gallant was the face of RWH —reaching out to donors, hospitals, universities, schools and organizations to ensure that assets found new purpose where they were needed most. He spoke with humility, sincerity, and genuine appreciation for Rotary and community service. For Dan Gallant, helping others was truly a mission of the heart.

Dan leaves behind his devoted wife, Marion; his sons, Shaun and Darcy (Theresa); beloved grandchildren, Dakota and Olivia; brothers Rod (Mary) and Dale; sisters Audrey (Leo), Barbara (Gordon), and Beverley (Raymond); along with many nieces and nephews.
Dan leaves this world a better place.

This is whay we work so hard to end Polio.

Thank you Schwanke for sharing this story.

Paul Alexander, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 78, was one of the last people in the world to live inside an iron lung—a towering, tube-like machine that kept him alive for over 70 years. At just six years old, Paul contracted polio during the devastating 1952 outbreak in Texas. The virus paralyzed him from the neck down and left him unable to breathe on his own. Doctors placed him in an iron lung, telling his parents he might not survive the night. But Paul defied the odds, beginning a lifelong journey of survival within the humming, steel confines of the machine that would become both his prison and protector.

Despite his physical limitations, Paul lived a life of astonishing courage and determination. Using a plastic stick held in his mouth, he taught himself to write, eventually earning a law degree and becoming a licensed attorney. He also authored a memoir, *Three Minutes for a Dog*, typing each word painstakingly with his mouth. Paul never allowed his condition to define his worth. Instead, he became a symbol of resilience, dignity, and the power of the human spirit. Friends and followers from around the world drew inspiration from his story and admired his sharp mind, wit, and unwavering strength.

Paul’s passing marks not just the end of a life, but the closing of a chapter in medical and human history. His decades spent inside an iron lung are a sobering reminder of the devastating reach of polio, and the miracle of modern vaccines. But beyond the machine and the diagnosis, Paul Alexander leaves behind a legacy of perseverance and purpose. His life—brave, difficult, and deeply meaningful—touched thousands, reminding us all that even within the harshest limits, hope, intellect, and humanity can flourish.

It began as a prize for a friendly competition among other Rotary Clubs. Adding to the intrigue is a bell from a popular ship, along with historical wood from Lord Nelson's vessel, Victory, which played a significant role in the Battle of Trafalgar. The rest is history.
