******Tommorrow Sunday Aug 9th.

This year marks the 81st anniversary of the largest single day of Canadian loss of life in a peacekeeping mission. On Aug 9th, 1974, a Canadian Forces Buffalo aircraft was shot down over Syria killing all 9 CAF peacekeepers on board.

Canada observes National Peacekeepers Day on Aug 9th not only to commoemorate the accident of 1974 but to honor all those who have served.

The Wellington Legion will conduct a Cenotaph Ceremony at 11:00am on Sunday, Aug 9th. Everyone is invited to participate.

It was an honour to gather with you today as we celebrate not only the 100th Anniversary of Canadian Legions but also the 80th Anniversary of Branch 17 Wellington Legion—a remarkable milestone that represents eight decades of service, remembrance, fellowship, and unwavering commitment to both veterans and our community.

Today, we dedicate this bench, handcrafted by our own veteran whose talent is more than wood and craftsmanship. It is a symbol of gratitude, respect, and appreciation for everything this Legion represents.

For 80 years, Branch 17 has stood as a place where veterans find understanding, support, and camaraderie. It has been a place where their sacrifices are remembered, their stories are honoured, and their service is never forgotten.

But the impact of this Legion reaches far beyond its veterans. Through countless volunteer hours, community events, youth programs, remembrance ceremonies, charitable work, and support for local families, Branch 17 has become an important part of the heart of Wellington.

It is a place where friendships are built, traditions are preserved, and everyone is welcomed. This bench serves as a lasting reminder of those values. It invites us to pause, to reflect, to remember those who served before us, and to appreciate those who continue to serve our community today.

May this bench stand as a tribute to the dedication of our veterans, the strength of our Legion, and the countless volunteers and members whose commitment has made Branch 17 what it is today.

Congratulations to Branch 17 Wellington Legion on 80 incredible years of service. May you continue to be a place of honour, compassion, friendship, and community for many years to come.
