National Accessibility Week: Building spaces where everyone belongs

At Inspiring Minds ELC, National Accessibility Week is a time to reflect on how we can create environments where every child, family, and educator feels included, supported, and valued.

Accessibility isn’t just about ramps or elevators, it's about the everyday choices we make that either open doors or quietly close them.

In early childhood spaces, accessibility can look like:
- Offering multiple ways for children to communicate (words, gestures, visuals, AAC)
- Creating sensory-friendly spaces for children who may feel overwhelmed
- Using inclusive language and avoiding assumptions about abilities or identities
- Adapting activities so all children can participate in meaningful ways
- Slowing down and giving children the time they need to process and respond

These small, intentional actions matter. They tell children: you belong here just as you are.

In Canada, accessibility is a shared responsibility, but many barriers still exist in everyday life. Think about heavy doors, overwhelming environments, or information shared in only one way.

For many people, these aren’t small challenges, they are daily barriers.

This week, we invite our community to reflect:
- What might make a space more accessible?
- Who might be unintentionally left out?
- What is one small change you can make?

Because accessibility isn’t a one-time effort. It's something we build, together, every day.

The Froggy Friends’ imaginations are in full swing! Pretend play happens consistently each day and throughout the day in our classroom. Whether we are taking care of babies, cooking in the house centre, running a restaurant, keeping others safe as superheroes, driving different kinds of vehicles, acting out a real life event or pretending to be different kinds of animals, you never know what you might see.

Pretend play gives us opportunities to build many important skills while having fun. Through these experiences, children practice communication and language skills, cooperation with peers, problem-solving, creativity, and emotional understanding. They also learn how to share ideas, take turns, and work together as they create their own imaginative worlds.

Some ways the children have shown their imagination and role-played what is happening in their own lives include:
- taking care of babies
- tractor tire hot tubs
- putting sunscreen on our horse friend
- hair cutting day at IMELC
- dress up fun
- pretending to be riding in a car
- a hard day at the office
- and even the hulk came to visit!

What a wet, wet day for our annual golf tournament — but our amazing community showed up anyway. To everyone who braved the weather, and to those who supported us from afar, thank you.

A huge shout out to our volunteers; the IMELC team, our Fundraising Committee, our sponsors, the Foxwood Golf Club staff, and of course, our golfers. Your energy and commitment kept the day bright despite the rain.

Congratulations to our winning team! We truly feel the love in our community. Thank you for making this day a success!

Whenever we have a sensory activity set out, children are naturally drawn to it. No matter what type of sensory experience is available, the Eager Beavers can always be found exploring and engaging with the materials.

Sensory play provides children with opportunities to deepen their understanding of the world through exploration and hands-on learning. For some children, sensory experiences become important milestones as they grow stronger, more confident, and more comfortable trying new things. While some children may initially be hesitant with sensory activities, it has been wonderful to watch their confidence and enjoyment grow throughout the year as they increasingly choose to participate and explore.

Within the Eager Beaver room, play dough is almost always available, offering endless opportunities for creativity, fine motor development, and imaginative play. More recently, the addition of the tuff tray has been a wonderful enhancement to our classroom environment. A variety of loose parts and materials have encouraged mornings filled with exploration, problem-solving, curiosity, and meaningful learning experiences.

The water table is another favourite sensory experience that is available most of the time. Although we occasionally change the materials and activities offered, water play continues to be one of the experiences the children look forward to most. They consistently discover new ways to experiment, explore, and collaborate with their peers through water play.

Sensory experiences support all areas of development by encouraging children to learn through curiosity, creativity, and hands-on exploration. These opportunities help strengthen language, cognitive, social, and motor skills while also supporting focus and self-regulation. Through sensory play, children are able to investigate their environment in meaningful and engaging ways, making it an important and valuable part of early childhood learning.

“Sensory play encourages learning through exploration, curiosity, problem solving and creativity. It helps to build nerve connections in the brain and encourages the development of language and motor skills. There are many benefits that may go unnoticed, such as the development of abilities to focus and block out distractions. Sensory play is an important part of childhood and, within reason, there are really no limits to what you can use in sensory activities.” — Subramani, A. (2026, May 4).
