Whenever we have a sensory activity set out, children are naturally drawn to it. No matter what type of sensory experience is available, the Eager Beavers can always be found exploring and engaging with the materials.
Sensory play provides children with opportunities to deepen their understanding of the world through exploration and hands-on learning. For some children, sensory experiences become important milestones as they grow stronger, more confident, and more comfortable trying new things. While some children may initially be hesitant with sensory activities, it has been wonderful to watch their confidence and enjoyment grow throughout the year as they increasingly choose to participate and explore.
Within the Eager Beaver room, play dough is almost always available, offering endless opportunities for creativity, fine motor development, and imaginative play. More recently, the addition of the tuff tray has been a wonderful enhancement to our classroom environment. A variety of loose parts and materials have encouraged mornings filled with exploration, problem-solving, curiosity, and meaningful learning experiences.
The water table is another favourite sensory experience that is available most of the time. Although we occasionally change the materials and activities offered, water play continues to be one of the experiences the children look forward to most. They consistently discover new ways to experiment, explore, and collaborate with their peers through water play.
Sensory experiences support all areas of development by encouraging children to learn through curiosity, creativity, and hands-on exploration. These opportunities help strengthen language, cognitive, social, and motor skills while also supporting focus and self-regulation. Through sensory play, children are able to investigate their environment in meaningful and engaging ways, making it an important and valuable part of early childhood learning.
“Sensory play encourages learning through exploration, curiosity, problem solving and creativity. It helps to build nerve connections in the brain and encourages the development of language and motor skills. There are many benefits that may go unnoticed, such as the development of abilities to focus and block out distractions. Sensory play is an important part of childhood and, within reason, there are really no limits to what you can use in sensory activities.” — Subramani, A. (2026, May 4).
