Today we’re recognizing World Fish Migration Day and World Turtle Day — and highlighting what makes the Niagara River such a unique and important ecosystem.

🐢 The Niagara River watershed is home to 8 turtle species, most of which are considered at risk. These long-lived reptiles depend on healthy shorelines, clean water, and safe nesting areas to survive.

🐟 The Niagara River also supports fish migration across two distinct ecosystems — the Upper and Lower Niagara River — separated by the natural barrier of Niagara Falls. This makes habitat connectivity and water quality especially important.

The Niagara River Remedial Action Plan supports projects that restore habitat, improve water quality, and protect the species that depend on this shared river.

World Migratory Bird Day – May 9

Today we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day and the incredible birds that rely on the Niagara River corridor during their long journeys.

This area is designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) because it supports significant bird populations that depend on the river for winter habitat, resting stopovers, and nesting. From waterfowl to songbirds, these species rely on healthy wetlands and shorelines to survive and thrive.

Protecting and restoring the Niagara River helps ensure these birds can continue to return—year after year. 🐦💙

🎣 Fish for free this Mother’s Day weekend!

Ontario’s Free Family Fishing Weekend takes place May 9–10, giving Canadian residents the chance to enjoy fishing without a licence.

Spending time fishing is a great way to connect with family, enjoy the outdoors, and experience local waters like the Upper Niagara River.

As you plan your outing, remember that part of caring for our waters—and ourselves—is staying informed about fish consumption. Some areas of the Niagara River have fish consumption restrictions, which is why it’s important to check advisories before keeping or eating your catch.

✅ Learn the rules for free fishing weekend:
✅ Check consumption advice in the Guide to Eating Ontario Fish:

Enjoy the experience, fish responsibly, and help protect our river for future generations.
