As we get closer to the municipal election, we continue to highlight some of Welland's chief magistrates. Focusing on the people, stories and moments that give us a glimpse into Welland's past.
________

🏛️Richard Morwood | 1863: Elected reeve for the Village of Welland |1881, 1883, 1886 & 1887: Elected mayor for the Town of Welland

Richard Morwood was a businessman, community leader and one of the most frequently elected people in Welland's history. He was elected to municipal council 23 times, serving as both reeve and mayor, with 24 years between his first and last elections as chief magistrate.

His general store, R. Morwood Co., became a Welland institution and operated for 112 years at 31 West Main Street (burned down in 1968 and was not rebuilt). Morwood himself was known for his generosity, civic involvement and deep connection to the community. He donated the land for what is now Central United Church, and during his final years in office, Welland saw major improvements including its first sewer, electric street lighting and municipal water supply.

By the time of his death in 1893, Morwood was a beloved member of the community. Businesses closed for his funeral, flags flew at half-mast, and one of the largest funeral gatherings in Welland's history took place. His obituary noted that “almost every man, woman and child” in the area felt as though they had lost a personal friend.

There's much more to Richard Morwood's story. Read the full profile to discover more about one of Welland's most respected and beloved community figures here https://wellandlibrary.omeka.net/exhibits/show/chief-magistrates/richardmorwood
