There is a big chance that we will watch addiction, homelessness and mental health explode into an even bigger issue. Most of us aren't thriving in this world, and no one is immune to falling on hard times.

We can scream at the top of a mountain that we need more funding, more help, different laws to make people accountable. That will only continue to fall on deaf ears.

Maybe we're going about this the wrong way way. We're trying to solve a problem that will never truly have a solution. So what do we do?

We CO-EXIST.....and yes it is possible.
We don't have to be enemies. The perception that people struggling with addiction and homelessness are terrible is something we hear all the time. Yes, they make terrible choices, we aren't denying this. If you heard many of their stories you would probably wonder how they are even still alive. Every story has a common denominator and that was mental health that was not dealt with. That led to the overwhelming fight to just feel normal.
Guess what the solution was for them? Drugs and alcohol. We can all sit here and say they made the choice to go that route. Sure they wanted to feel better, and for most of us it won't lead to addiction but for others it will. It did for them.

The amount of functioning addicts out there is mind blowing, and these are usually the first people to pop onto our posts with negative comments. But that's ok because we see you and understand that you too are fighting a battle no one knows about.

So instead of trying to fix a problem that was never meant to be fixed, let's figure out how we can all co-exist. This is possible but will need a different mindset from many and support from our city.

I remember a very wise friend telling us that every person involved in running the city of Welland has the potential of being a real hero but that would mean making decisions that no one else had the guts to do. So that being said who has the ability to put Welland on the map for helping it's most vulnerable citizens in ways that others wouldn't even think about.

If that's you.....let's talk, because this problem isn't going anywhere and it's time to take a different approach.🩵
