Want to make a difference this school year? September is the perfect time to start your journey as a Volunteer Coach with our Letters, Sounds and Words program!

💬 All in-person training sessions are held at the Strong Start headquarters (1-565 Kumpf Drive) workshop-style format. You’ll need to complete one Part 1 and one Part 2 session, each just two hours long.
🗓️ Multiple September training dates are now available, so you can choose what works best for your schedule.

As summer winds down, simple everyday activities can help children stay connected to letters, sounds and words before the new school year begins.

From I Spy in a Book to Alphabet Walks and Playdough Letters, our Get Ready for School resources offer simple, screen-free ways to build confidence and keep reading skills growing — no special training needed, just a few minutes of shared time together.

These activities are designed to complement the work educators do in the classroom, giving families an easy way to support their child's early literacy journey at home.

Whether it's a bedtime story, a fort-side read-along, or a quiet few minutes with a favourite picture book, these small moments help children build confidence and familiarity with letters, sounds, and words.

Reading together is one of the simplest ways families can support a child's early literacy journey — no special training required, just time and togetherness.

Small, positive interactions can make a big difference in a child's confidence. Strong Start volunteers give children dedicated one-to-one time to practise letters, sounds, and words in a supportive, encouraging environment.

You don't need a teaching background. You just need a bit of time and a willingness to show up for a child. We provide the training and structure; you bring the encouragement!
