Civic Tech WR

Civic Tech WR CivicTechWR is an inclusive multi-disciplinary group working together to improve the lives of the residents of Waterloo Region through civic technology. Why?

To improve the lives of the region’s residents, by applying the innovation at the heart of Waterloo Region to technology-based projects. How? By connecting citizens, civic innovators, technologists, community groups, governments, and entrepreneurs with civic tech initiatives. We strive to empower them to work together, exchange ideas and tools to improve the lives of the residents in and around Wa

terloo Region through civic technology. What? Here's the vision:
Once a month, we host a leader from the community to speak to the group. This could be someone from a local non-profit, from government, from industry, or any citizen - what matters is that they have something to share with our group, something to teach us, or something to inspire us. During our events, we provide space for people to come and work together on civic tech projects. Ideally, any space we use has great WiFi, power, and whiteboards. Toronto, Ottawa, and London’s Civic Tech Groups all meet on Tuesday evenings, and we intend to follow suit, so that joint virtual events could be possible. What is Civic Tech? Civic Technology is technology that enables engagement or participation of the public for stronger development, enhancing citizen communications, improving government infrastructure, and generally improving the public good. It encompasses civic applications, platforms supporting government bodies, institutions and other software enabling those goals.

🙌 Huge thanks to everyone who joined this week’s conversation with Rory White about Civic Searchlight!

Rory built Civic Searchlight to track a climate misinformation campaign that weaponized AI chatbots against municipal councils across Canada. That work helped municipalities make better decisions—and revealed that he hadn’t just built an investigative tool, but civic infrastructure.

Three takeaways for CivicTech builders:

🌍 Start with the real world. Begin with a concrete, urgent problem—not a generic platform idea.

🧩 Don’t reinvent the wheel. You can create great by stitching together existing data and off‑the‑shelf tools.

🔍 Follow the demand. Journalists, researchers, and municipal staff now use Civic Searchlight to surface patterns, compare councils, and inform decisions.

If you’re working in this space, your next “small” idea might be bigger than you think. 🚀

We’ll be back next Wednesday to build more projects!

📅 This week at CivicTechWR: Join Rory White, Technology and Democracy Reporter for Canada’s National Observer, and creator of Civic Searchlight 🔦

Civic Searchlight is a first-of-its-kind tool that helps journalists and researchers search local council meeting transcripts across 550 Canadian municipalities.

We'll talk...
🔹 Why we need tools that open access to public meetings
🔹 What’s involved in building a free resource for journalists and researchers
🔹 How journalism can drive new technology for democratic accountability

Come for Rory’s experience. Bring your questions. Then, stay for our weekly breakout sessions where we use tech to tackle real-world challenges in Waterloo Region.

Thanks everyone for coming out tonight! We're well into our season, with projects moving to their last stages - but we also took the time for musical movies trivia night at team came out strong! 💪 🎤 our best categories:
1) Matching the song to its movie!!🎥
2) Recognizing John Travolta's singing voice from the 70s
3) and all of us unanimously realizing at the same time that the Trolls and Smurfs movies are basically the same thing (the only difference being one with visible hair, and one without!)
