The Town of Wasaga Beach is welcoming a $20,000 investment from the Province of Ontario through Experience Ontario to support local tourism, drive economic activity, and expand one of the community’s most anticipated fall events.

Returning October 3–4, 2026, at Klondike Sports Park, the Mayor’s Charity RAM Rodeo and Hootenanny Fall Festival has quickly become a major regional attraction, drawing thousands of attendees from across Ontario for a weekend of live entertainment, professional rodeo action, family activities, artisan vendors, food trucks, and fall-themed programming.

The case study — “Reimagining Wasaga Beach to Develop Destination Wasaga” — highlights how the town is building public-private alignment and advancing a community-driven master plan to support the transformation of its beachfront, downtown and tourism areas.

BREAKING NEWS - Piping Plovers Get Added Protection at Wasaga Beach: New seasonal technicians and community volunteers will support nest monitoring, beach surveys, public education, and long-term shoreline stewardship

“As responsibility for Beach Areas 1 and 2 transitions from the Province to the Town, our focus is on making sure the care of our beachfront remains thoughtful, informed, and grounded in best practices,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “This work is about protecting what makes Wasaga Beach special — from sensitive shoreline areas to the endangered species that depend on them.”

As Wasaga Beach prepares for another busy summer season, the Town is expanding on-the-ground protection for the endangered piping plover with the addition of two Destination Wasaga Piping Plover Technicians.

The new seasonal roles will support monitoring and recovery efforts for the endangered shorebird, including beach surveys, nest monitoring, data collection, and public education with residents and visitors.

“Aligned with past Ontario Parks practices, the Town is taking a phased and responsible approach to building its in-house stewardship capacity,” said Lee Furlotte, Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities. “These new technician roles are an important first step, and we expect to continue strengthening this team next season as part of a long-term municipal approach to piping plover protection and beach management. We are grateful to our provincial and federal partners, who are working alongside us on the ground, sharing equipment, expertise, and best practices as we build local capacity.”

BREAKING NEWS: Wasaga Beach Advances Piping Plover Protection Through Collaboration with Birds Canada - Dedicated training and threat mitigation support from Birds Canada will support municipal stewardship plans

The Town of Wasaga Beach is collaborating with Birds Canada to support the protection and monitoring of Piping Plovers through targeted training and coordinated stewardship along the beachfront.

The collaboration is intended to ensure that local stewardship is aligned with established conservation science, species-at-risk management best practices, and the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA).

Beginning April 9, Birds Canada will deliver workshops and field-based training to Town staff and stewardship teams, focusing on monitoring and surveying protocols, threat mitigation, habitat protection and education. Regular training provided by Birds Canada will build the Town’s knowledge and capacity, and become a formal part of its Municipal Piping Plover Beach Management Plan.

“Protecting species at risk is a core responsibility of the Town of Wasaga Beach as we take on an expanded stewardship role,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “This collaboration ensures the Town’s work is informed by recognized expertise and grounded in best practices. There is nobody more qualified than Birds Canada to deliver this training, or to deliver on-the-ground support to our municipal stewardship team throughout the nesting season.”
