Shared Legacy Partnership

Shared Legacy Partnership Sharing RM of Stuartburn’s unique nature with future generations in Manitoba's tall-grass prairie.

The Shared Legacy Partnership is a cooperative working group led by the Rural Municipality of Stuartburn and The Nature Conservancy of Canada along with partners Sunrise Corner Economic Development and Province of Manitoba. The primary focus of The Partnership is to alleviate threats for species at risk and improve their habitat through effective communication and coordination between the partners

and targeted outreach. A hidden gem centered right here in Sunrise Corner in southeastern Manitoba, the Tall Grass Prairie Natural Area covers 445,628 hectares and supports one of the largest and last remaining tall-grass prairie landscapes in North America. It forms the northern end of an international conservation corridor comprised of protected and managed prairies, wetlands, forests and streams within a working landscape that includes conservation, agriculture and eco-tourism. The tall-grass prairie is home to 28 listed Canadian species at risk (SAR), such as the monarch butterfly, the globally rare Poweshiek skipperling butterfly, and the Western prairie fringed orchid. Many of these species depend on the tall-grass prairie for their very survival. What is the Shared Legacy Partnership mandate?

- Creating and delivering a strategy for sharing Stuartburn’s unique nature with future generations.
- Engaging with local producers, landowners, Stuartburn residents, and Indigenous groups to guide our direction.
- Pursuing “win-win” solutions that work for the ecosystem, landowners, residents, our economy, and communities. How can you help?

- Visit the website www.sharedlegacymb.ca to learn more
- Explore the tall-grass prairie for yourself by hiking the trails in the RM of Stuartburn
- Invite people you know to come and experience our unique ecosystem

"Seeing any wildcat in Manitoba can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience; it’s time with nature that you won’t forget. Even though they are rare to see, I take great pride in living in an area where it is still possible for these wildcats of Manitoba to be seen."

Plant lovers and outdoor enthusiasts rejoice! A new book which describes the multitude of flora found in the province of Manitoba is now available for pre-order. Dr. Diana Bizecki Robson, our Curator of Botany, along with a team of volunteer botanists, has spent many years working on Manitoba Flora: A Guide to the Vascular Plants of Manitoba. This publication will replace the out-of-date and out-of-print Flora of Manitoba by Homer J. Scoggan, published in 1957.

Paperback editions can be pre-ordered online or in person through the Manitoba Museum Shop for just $34.99 (printing November 2025). E-books and hard copy print-on-demand books can be purchased from FriesenPress. Royalties from the book will be used toward publishing Manitoba Flora: Vol. 2, Dicots, which is currently in progress.
