Laura Densmore Scholarship Fund.

The Virden Area Foundation has the privilege of having Laura’s daughters Ashton Densmore and Haylee Plett attend grant night and join us in a tribute to Laura and talk about the scholarship fund the family has set up. Below are heartfelt words from the girls:

Our mom, Laura, began her career at Funshine Daycare in 1988. She helped nurture and raise hundreds of children within our community. Not only was she gentle, kind, understanding, and loving - but she also installed those characteristics into the Funshine children.

In April 2024, mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. Despite being handed a terminal illness, she chose to continue showing up for the kids until the day that she was admitted to the hospital. Even then she would FaceTime for events like Daycare Graduation from her hospital room.

Mom cared for the youth far beyond the four walls of Funshine . She showed up for them at Christmas concerts, sports games and celebrated all of their successes. She would even point out which children went to Funshine as they graduated high school.

We created the Laura Densmore Memorial scholarship as a way to try and continue Laura‘s passion for youth. Every year, we are awarding a VCI graduate with $1000 who chooses to go into a child-related career. Some examples are early childhood educators, speech pathologists, social workers, teachers and more. What better way to honour Laura than to help someone that loves children as much as she does, and is also choosing a career that will benefit children.

Our hopes are to continue growing the scholarship as we feel that we can do more to help the children and youth within our community. Our current goal is to raise enough money to cover the entire scholarship amount of $1000 per year. Once completed, we would love to team up with the schools in Virden to create a Gym Bag Program. This program would provide kids who do not have the means to purchase proper gym attire a gym bag, gym, clothing, gym shoes, and hygiene products at no cost to the kid or their family.

And of course, if we can successfully do that, we will continue to find and fund more ideas that focus on helping all children, kids, and youth within the community.

We could write an entire novel on how amazing of a person that our mom was, and how much she loved not only our children, but all of yours as well. We hope to continue that legacy for her. Thank you for allowing us your time to share the “Laura Densmore Memorial Scholarship” with you.❤️

Linda Hayward‘s Legacy continues to make a lasting impact through the scholarship fund established in her memory with the Virden Area Foundation.

Linda was a devoted homemaker who farmed alongside her husband, Lorne, while raising their four children. After battling COPD for several years, Linda received compassionate care in both Virden and later Elkhorn. Grateful for the support and kindness shown by the nursing community, Linda made the thoughtful decision before her passing in 2019 to give back in a meaningful way.

With the guidance of her lawyer while preparing her will, she established a scholarship fund through the Virden and Area Foundation to support students pursuing a career in nursing. Each year, depending on the interest earned, a student from VCI entering the nursing profession receives a scholarship of approximately $900-$1000 in Linda’s memory.

Through this scholarship, Linda’s compassion, gratitude and commitment to caring for others continue to inspire future generations of nurses.

The Thomas Sill foundation was established in 1987 by the last will of Thomas Sill, a Manitoba resident and chartered accountant with offices across the province For decades, The Thomas Sill foundation supported charitable activities in Manitoba, awarding grants to many communities with the vision that these communities would continue to grow and prosper. At the end of 2023 the Thomas Sill foundation wound down operations, but wanted to ensure its long-standing legacy of supporting Manitoba continued with some of the remaining resources. The Thomas Sill Manitoba fund was established at the Winnipeg foundation to benefit and Endow Manitoba community foundation member communities. This year the generosity of The Thomas Sill Manitoba Fund allowed an additional $22,264 to be disbursed into our community. The grant agreement includes responsive granting, supporting programming, new initiatives and operations of charities allowing support to various initiatives that benefit the community. This year the money will benefit seven different programs/organizations.

Virden Minor Ball - youth
The West-Man, The Sherwood, Elkwood Manor- senior programming/activities
The Virden Pool - all ages
Border Regional Library- youth programming and snacks
Virden Handi Van - senior services

Youth in Philanthropy is a program by the Winnipeg Foundation designed to introduce young people, primarily high school students, to philanthropy and community development. The VAF provides a $3,500 annual grant that this group selects and distributes into the community. As we help them grow their endowment fund, the VAF matches an additional 50% of all the money received by YIP for their fund, each calendar year up to a maximum of $1,500.
