“Montreal Community Net-Zero Energy Demonstration
Partnership Brief — 2026
Purpose
To establish a private-public-community partnership to develop a Montreal neighbourhood-scale demonstration of a resilient, low-carbon energy system integrating renewable generation, battery storage, energy efficiency and intelligent energy management.
Montréal’s current Climate Plan contains 52 measures and targets a carbon-neutral city by 2050, including reducing fossil-fuel use in buildings and creating greener, more resilient living environments.
The Proposed Demonstration
The project would bring together:
* Solar energy
* Vertical wind generation, where technically and economically appropriate
* Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
* Building energy-efficiency measures
* Smart energy-management and microgrid technologies
* Electric-vehicle infrastructure
* Climate-resilience measures
* Community participation and shared economic benefits
The objective is not to promote a single technology, but to demonstrate how multiple technologies can operate together as an integrated neighbourhood energy system.
The Opportunity
The proposed demonstration could serve as a living laboratory for Montreal, producing measurable data on:
GHG reduction • renewable-energy production • peak-demand management • energy savings • resilience • investment economics • social benefits
An independent sustainability and life-cycle assessment could subsequently document the environmental, economic and social performance of the model.
This is where CIRAIG could potentially contribute significant scientific value: it is an internationally recognized Montreal centre specializing in life-cycle assessment, sustainability metrics, circular economy and pathways toward carbon neutrality, and works with industry, governments and organizations.

Initial Partnership Ask
We are not initially seeking funding.
We are seeking a strategic meeting with organizations working on Montreal’s climate transition to:
1. Assess the concept’s alignment with existing Montreal initiatives;
2. Identify an appropriate demonstration neighbourhood, development or property;
3. Identify potential technology, research and financing partners;
4. Determine the regulatory and technical pathway;
5. Develop an initial feasibility and partnership framework.
Why Now?
Montreal is actively implementing its Climate Plan and pursuing carbon neutrality while increasing resilience.
CRE-Montréal’s stated objectives include accelerating the socio-ecological and energy transition, combating climate change and increasing the resilience of living environments.
That makes the proposed demonstration potentially complementary to existing Montreal climate initiatives rather than a standalone project.”
