On Saturday May 30, 2026, the GVSEA’s Saturday crew released the last of Goldstream Hatchery’s Coho smolts. Hatchery volunteers reared over 160,000 Coho from brood year 2024, including 103,000 smolts released in the past few weeks.

Overseeing the transfer and waving goodbye to the final Coho release were Wendy Lane, Ben Eardley, Bill McMillan, Gladys Schreiner, Antoine Heberrt-Breton, Andrew Young, Reece Hasanen, Jewel Hasanen, and Greg Burgess. Kudos to all of the dedicated volunteers of the GVSEA who manage the daily hatchery operations.

Special thank you to photo and video contributors Don Lowen, Andrew Young, and

With and just around the corner, it is the perfect time to show how essential clean, clear, cold water is to our juvenile coho being released. It is their whole world 🌎.

As pacific salmon are an anadromous species (born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean to mature, and return to freshwater to reproduce) they rely on high water quality for spawning, incubation and their early life cycle.

It’s a long journey from egg to smolt with many steps in between to ensure happy and healthy Coho.

Goldstream Volunteer Salmonid Enhancement Association teams work tirelessly each spring to send the eager youngsters into the Goldstream River. The journey for the smolts continues with their travels into estuarial waters where they will start to transition their body chemistry from freshwater to saltwater for their next stage in the ocean.
