It’s May 1968. While Paris erupts outside, nine-year-old Christophe finds himself tucked away with his wonderfully unconventional family — two eccentric uncles, a larger-than-life great-grandmother, and, soon enough, an unexpected guest.

THE SAFE HOUSE (LA CACHE) is playful, strange, funny and full of family history, the kind that has a habit of resurfacing when you least expect it.

Today, we remember October 7.

We remember the lives lost, those who were taken hostage, the survivors, and the families and communities forever changed.

Three years later, we carry their memories with us.

This Thanksgiving Monday, we’re celebrating the 40th anniversary of An American Tail, a film many of us grew up with, and one a new generation is now discovering.

But we’re also using the occasion to do something that feels very VIJFF: watch a story together, and then make space to talk about what it brings up.

After the film, we invite you to join What Does Belonging Mean Here & Now?, a community conversation about (im)migration, belonging, building a life somewhere new, and how we can help people feel at home in our community.

Come for the movie. Stay for the conversation. Bring the kids, bring a friend, bring your own experiences and questions.

What’s more important: finding bliss—or yearning for it?

We put the question to someone who has spent a career inhabiting other people’s lives.

Ahead of our VIJFF screening of Bliss (Hemda), writer Laura Goldstein sat down with acclaimed Israeli actor Sasson Gabay for a conversation about the film, family, guilt, getting older on screen, and the relationship between Sassi and Effi at the heart of the story.
