Spring hiking season is here — and few places on Earth compare to the ancient rainforests of Vancouver Island’s spectacular west coast.

From easy roadside boardwalks beneath towering Douglas-firs to remote old-growth wilderness trails accessible only by boat, the region around Tofino and Ucluelet offers incredible opportunities to experience some of the world’s finest remaining temperate rainforests, including massive western redcedars, towering Sitka spruce, and stunning coastal landscapes.

Our newest hiking guide highlights renowned old-growth destinations, from Cathedral Grove along the journey west to the ancient rainforests of Clayoquot Sound, including Meares Island, Flores Island, and other unique trails.

Old-growth forests in British Columbia are among the most biodiverse temperate ecosystems on Earth, supporting an extraordinary range of species, many found nowhere else. From the majestic Roosevelt elk to threatened marbled murrelets, and towering Sitka spruce trees to the tiniest of lichens, these incredible forests are globally significant strongholds of life.

Ancient forests’ structural complexity, with their varied canopies, diverse understories, and interplay of life and decay, provides critical habitat for thousands of species and microorganisms. This complexity is what makes these ecosystems so resilient, while also making them especially vulnerable to industrial logging.

Today, across British Columbia — and around the world — primary forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. BC claims to be a "world leader in sustainable forest management," yet endangered old-growth forests and critical wildlife habitat continue to be lost.

Despite previous commitments, the BC NDP government has yet to deliver its promised Biodiversity & Ecosystem Health Framework, which would prioritize ecosystem health and integrity above resource extraction.

This International Day for Biological Diversity, the theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact” couldn’t be more urgent. If the province is to truly be a “world leader,” this must begin at home here in BC — by ensuring the permanent protection of endangered ancient forests and the myriad of life forms that call them home.

For Earth Day this year, AFA staff stepped away from our desks to spend time in the forests we advocate for every day.

Travelling to Port Renfrew in Pacheedaht territory, we explored the incredible Eden Grove, one of the finest remaining unprotected tracts of valley-bottom old-growth forests on Vancouver Island. As we hiked through the grove, we enjoyed soaking in the early signs of spring: trillium emerging at the base of forest giants, budding salmonberries and huckleberries, the sweeping neon greens of fresh ferns, and the energetic call of a Pacific wren bouncing around the forest. The ancient forest is home to black bears, black-tailed deer, elusive cougars, threatened bird species, and more creatures big and small.

Of course, we also had to say hello to Big Lonely Doug next door – the iconic symbol of both the beauty and destruction of old-growth forests in BC. Before the forest around Doug was logged in 2011, this area was connected to the rest of Eden Grove and would have been one of the most impressive groves in existence.

Though many of these irreplaceable forests have been lost, we still have the chance to protect places like Eden Grove and the diverse wildlife that depends on them. Its exceptional beauty and proximity to Port Renfrew, Canada’s Tall-Tree Capital, could make it a world-renowned destination.

We’re deeply appreciative of the many creative ways our supporters help advance the movement to protect endangered old-growth forests in British Columbia. From monthly giving to donating a portion of their sales to workplace matching programs, there are so many ways to make a difference!

Thank you to:
🌲 Townline Homes and its employees, whose participation in a matching gift program resulted in a gift to Ancient Forest Alliance (AFA).
🌲 Nathan Hutchinson, who donates 100% of sales from his book, Evergreen, to environmental organizations, including AFA.
🌲 Kootenay Woman(Kootenay Wildcrafting Company), which is a generous monthly donor.
🌲 ZULA Jewelry + Design, which donates a portion of sales of its Cedar Collection to the old-growth campaign.
🌲 Wild Life Illustration Co., which is a 1% for the Planet contributor.
🌲 Living Forest Oceanside Campground & RV Park, which has been a dedicated supporter for the past half-decade.
🌲 Crag XClimbing, which featured AFA’s work in its Spring Fling Comp Thing campaign.

Your support and dedication have been paramount to AFA’s campaign success, and we’re extremely grateful! Conservationists, the BC Greens, and a former cabinet minister take aim at the NDP’s stalled efforts to protect endangered ecosystems and old-growth forests.

Earth Day saw Premier David Eby release a statement celebrating BC’s wild places and passion for protecting the environment. But the reality on the ground tells a different story.

🗣️ Ken Wu, executive director of the Endangered Ecosystems Alliance, warns BC has “stalled and started going backwards” when it comes to protecting ecosystems, including ancient rainforests at high risk of biodiversity loss.

🗣️ Former BC Liberal MLA Mike Morris, who led a provincewide biodiversity review in 2015, gives the Eby government “a failing grade” on strengthening ecosystem protections, as biodiversity loss is continuing at unprecedented levels across the province.

🗣️ BC Green Party MLA Jeremy Valeriote concludes he hasn’t seen any evidence the government is strengthening ecosystem protections.

These remarks come as the official number of species at risk of extinction in BC reaches an all-time high, whilst the government continues to auction off old-growth forests for clearcutting and the promised Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health Framework is nowhere to be seen.

In the article, Wu describes what BC needs to do to strengthen ecosystem protections, including:

Develop conservation targets for different ecosystems to ensure protected areas encompass valley bottoms that are home to a great diversity of life.
Provide conservation financing - known as ‘solutions-space funding’ - for First Nations so old-growth logging can be deferred without nations losing a major source of their revenue.
Close logging loopholes that enable logging within old-growth management areas and wildlife habitat areas.

“The B.C. government needs to get us out of the business of old-growth logging,” Wu said.
