MARCH 1, 3 and 5 at THE VIC THEATRE: SIRĀT

If you enjoy hypnotic underground techno and emotive ambient, we cannot recommend the film Sirāt enough as something to be seen on a proper screen and sound system. Movie theatre sound is generally dialed to have 110 decibels to provide ample headroom for soundtrack dynamics as well as proper subwoofers to generate sound pressure levels for films to be FELT, not just heard. Sirāt takes pushes all these features to their limits with the soundtrack by Berlin artist Kangding Ray (Raster-Noton, Ara, Invada, Berlin Atonal) in one of the best electronic music scores we've heard in years. While there are some legit depictions of desert raves and the healing power of underground dance culture, there are also abrupt and realistic scenes of tremendous violence - so it may not be for everyone. Amidst its many layers, Sirāt carries a political message regarding class, warfare and the migrant crisis in our present era, and the hope of our shared and chosen humanity amidst tragedy.

Chris Corsano & John Brennan are a percussion duo focused on improvisation, resonance, and rhythm through collaboration. Since 2016, they have developed a working relationship that began when Brennan invited Corsano to contribute to The Temporal Drum Set (2016–2018), a sound installation and performance project examining the sonic memory and agency of the drum set. In May 2024, Corsano joined Brennan’s group Earth Ball for a two-week UK tour, which included a collaborative performance with pianist Steve Beresford at Café Oto in London.

Their work together bridges extended techniques, instrument modification, experimentation, and free improvisation. They have performed as a duo and in a trio with Elisa Ferrari at Open Space, Victoria BC, with recent appearances including Vancouver’s long-running Fake Jazz concert series (2024). In January 2024, Corsano and Brennan recorded their debut duo album Buzzing With Rumours, released by Mint Records in February 2026.

Chris Corsano (b. 1975, USA) is a New York–based drummer known for his innovations across free jazz, avant-rock, and experimental music. Described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s great drummers,” he has performed with Björk, Joe McPhee, Paul Flaherty, Okkyung Lee, Bill Orcutt, and many others.

John Brennan is a drummer, sound artist, and improviser based in Vancouver, on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. His work spans installation, sonic sculpture, and performance, focusing on the acoustic memory of instruments and the extended potential of the drum set. He is a member of Earth Ball, whose recent LP Actual Earth Music Vol. 1 & 2 (Upset The Rhythm) follows collaborations with Steve Beresford and Corsano. Brennan has also collaborated with Victoria Shen, John Dieterich, Greg Saunier, Raven Chacon, and many others.

Kim Alpert combines analog and digital technologies, movement, music, and interactivity, to create sculptural and performance-based video systems. Kim's visual practice centers on humanism with inquisitions into psychology and spirituality - understanding and translating the impact of visual language to create meaning.

HELP US KEEP FREE / BY DONATION / AFFORDABLE EVENTS GOING...

We know 2025 has been a difficult year for many, and we know accessible arts events are an important part of the social fabric when times are tough.

The Garden City Electronic Music Society (GCEMS) has always endeavoured to create low-barrier and all-ages events and cultivate an intergenerational appreciation for electronic music.

While we receive modest grant funding from all levels of government, the Society cannot operate on grants alone. GCEMS is a Canada Revenue Agency registered charity through which donations shore up the ever increasing costs of running our events.

If you've enjoyed our events over the last decade, please consider a donation to the society as part of your year-end giving. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps support the continuation of GCEMS events into the future.

You can donate by e-transfer to gcems [at] gcems [dot] ca or donate by credit card online through CanadaHelps:
