Victoria Makerspace

Victoria Makerspace Wanna make cool stuff?! We are a member-operated shared space where people come together and collaborate while sharing tools, resources and knowledge.

The Victoria Makerspace is a community-operated, shared workshop, where people can meet, learn and work on their creative projects. We have a wood and metal shop, 3D printer and laser cutter amongst other tools. There is also a BioSpace, a DIY Biology lab. We hold classes and workshops so you can learn to use the tools independently - maybe you can teach us a thing or two as well!

🪵⚡ Frankenstein Shelf ⚡🪵
Built by maker Shelley, this cabinet is made from a gifted piece of highly “imperfect” chestnut as well as a couple of scrap spalted maple pieces salvaged from the Questionably Useful Pieces bin. 1/2” boards with central shelves dado jointed together. 1/4” backing made from parts of the chestnut that couldn’t be load-bearing, and semi-bookmatched to show a continuous crack.

Updates from the FIX IT Team!

FIX IT is the high school robotics team who makes our home at Makerspace. It’s been a busy and exciting spring for the team!

At the BC FTC Championships, FIX IT earned the 2nd Place Inspire Award - the highest honor of the competition! This incredible achievement has earned them an invitation to compete at the Asia Pacific Open Championships in Sydney, Australia this July.

The team also exhibited their skills at the Engineering Showcase on April 2, competing against both high school teams and engineering students from the University of Victoria. In an exciting moment, the FIX IT team took home the Innovation Award!

We’re so proud of their hard work, creativity, and dedication. Stay tuned as they prepare for Australia!

Just a bit of bee house bling

Local mason bee enthusiast Jim Fishwick contacted Victoria Makerspace to get some help making inspirational signs for his mason bee houses. Our volunteers stepped in and used our laser cutters to make custom wooden signs that are now mounted on the houses.

Remember when plasma balls were all the rage in the mid 80's? Today at Makerspace we used a variac transformer in our electronics lab to power up a thrift store plasma ball. To our surprise and glee the ball came to life, spectacularly !

Our member, Nic, used one of our laser cutters to create her first paint night for the community! Over this past year she learned the LightBurn laser cutter program and continued teaching herself this awesome program. She designed these two layered flowers to add some Valentine’s Day fun for the community. Stay tuned for her next class!

Check out this beautiful marquetry tea box built by one of our members, Chance McClendon. Chance used many Makerspace tools to make the tea box: CNC router, laser cutter, shaper origin, and many wood shop tools.
