March 6, 2026 was truly a special day as Phase 1 of the $25 million redevelopment of Camp Shawnigan broke ground.
Nearly 80 years ago, Lions Clubs across BC founded The BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities with a simple but powerful mission to support children with disabilities in living fuller and more independent lives. Everything being built at Camp Shawnigan is rooted in that original vision of service.
Lions Clubs from across Vancouver Island and surrounding Islands joined for the groundbreaking. It was a powerful reminder that Lions continue to Serve and help others, helping Easter Seals is in our hearts. ❤️
Nearing 50 years of operation, the former camp facilities reached the end of its lifespan and closed in October 2025 to allow for significant infrastructure upgrades and is now moving forward with construction on Phase 1. infrastructure upgrades for Phase 1. We are grateful for the support of community leaders, foundations and the Provincial Government for their support thus far but more money is still needed to complete this redevelopment.
When complete, Camp Shawnigan will become North America’s first purpose-built, year-round inclusive camp for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities, setting a new standard for accessibility and belonging.
This is a continuation of the commitment made decades ago by Lions Clubs in British Columbia. If you have that same compassion, community spirit and dedication to service that we do, come join us. We are proud of our accomplishments! 👏
