UVic Students for Literacy

UVic Students for Literacy Don’t judge a book by its cover? Neither do we! We work in schools and on the UVic campus.

Students for Literacy is a club that provides weekly classroom and Saturday reading mentorship to kids in Victoria, BC. PROGRAMS: Classroom Tutoring and Reading Buddies

- Get references/reference letters

ABOUT US:

UVic Students for Literacy was founded in 1994. The club stemmed from a program hosted by Frontier College, but has since become an independent organization. The goal of the club is to promote literacy throughout Victoria by providing free reading tutoring for children. The club is a non-profit organization, and it is run by student volunteers. The club receives a small amount of funding from the UVic Student Society, but most of the club’s money is raised through various fundraisers such as bake sales. Outside of promoting literacy, our club offers a variety of social events that allow the members of the club to relax, have fun, and get to know each other. Some examples of events we have done in the past include: barbeques, ghost tours of downtown Victoria, movie nights, pub nights, and much more!

Hello,

I hope everyone is transitioning well into this new “online” schooling and staying safe and healthy. At the start of every school year as many of you know we run the reading buddies and classroom tutor programs. Unfortunately we have had to make the decision to cancel both of these programs for the Fall semester. This was a hard decision for us all to make as we love being a part of these programs and were excited to share the experience with you all.

We hope that in the near future we will be able to welcome new volunteers and returning volunteers back to the program and will keep you all updated.

We wish you all the best with the semester!

Program Coordinators,
Jayda, Sally, Emily, Joey and Saja

Hey everyone! We are the UVic Students for literacy and we are looking for volunteers for the new school year! We are a community service club looking to promote reading and writing skills in our community! We currently run two programs:

The Reading Buddies program meets for about 2 hours every Saturday afternoon, where you can meet with your little buddy to read with them, play literacy games, and overall be a mentor.

The Classroom tutoring program matches you with a local elementary class to meet with for an hour every week and read either with the whole class or one-on-one with some students needing that extra support!

Any Uvic student can join us and we would love to have you! Follow us on Instagram , on Facebook at Uvic Students for Literacy or email one of our five coordinators, Sally, Jayda, Emily, Saja or Joey at [email protected]

Some group pictures from what ended up being our last Reading Buddies session for this school year! We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy this summer. It is hard to predict what our programs will look like in the fall, but we look forward to keeping in touch and hopefully seeing many of you in September!

Part-time nanny position! Great opportunity for those interested in working with children.

Hello - caregivers and nannies!

Our nanny has been offered another opportunity so we are looking for part time care for our kids, starting ASAP. Location is Oak Bay, near Uvic.

Hours are Tuesday-Thursday-Friday, or Tuesday-Wednesday-Friday from 8:15 am to 5:30 pm. Involves primarily caring for our sweet and happy 7 month old son, with school drop off and after-school-care pick up and after school art class attendance for our kind and thoughtful five year old daughter. Will also need coverage for spring break for both kids. Also need a willingness to take the kids on the bus and out for activities.

We would be delighted to find a new caring, loving nanny. Also open to being part of a nanny share or full time daycare for our 7 month old in Gordon Head/Oak Bay Area.

Please PM me if you think we might be a good fit!

Many thanks 🙂

Call for volunteers! We are looking for volunteers for both of our programs: Classroom Tutoring and Reading Buddies.
Classroom tutoring involves placing you in an elementary school classroom for one hour, once a week (based on your availability). Reading Buddies runs for two hours every Saturday in the basement of the SUB. You will be paired with an elementary aged child to read together, or play literacy games. If either of these programs sound exciting to you, then we’d love to have you as a volunteer! Please email us at [email protected] if you are interested or have any further questions.

Part Time Nanny Needed:

I worked for this family for a year and a half and they are amazing employers! I have been so lucky to work with such wonderful parents, and supportive, honest, kind, thankful employers. The kids are funny, creative, and love books! We hike Mt. Work, we play board games, and they dress up in costumes and wear them around town. They are the best!

I hope you get the chance to work for them too!!

Hello everyone! We are currently looking for more people who would be interested in being a Reading Buddies volunteer this year! Reading Buddies includes pairing big buddies (you!) with a little buddy (an elementary aged child in the community). We meet 12:30-2:30 every Saturday in the basement of the SUB, and you will read, play literacy games or just hang out with your buddy.
This program is a great way to get experience with kids, gain volunteer hours, and make a meaningful impact on a child in our community.
If you are interested please email us at [email protected]! Looking forward to hearing from you 😄
