You don't need to be a professional social media manager.

Final October Meeting Reminder

On October 16th, BFF will gather on Salt Spring Island for an important community connection meeting.
This gathering represents something we believe deeply in:
That the people closest to the work should have opportunities to shape the conversations.
That community knowledge is valuable.
That relationships matter.
That listening comes before designing.
And that meaningful systems change requires people to come together.

Thanks to the support of the Salt Spring Island Foundation, we have the opportunity to create space for these conversations and connections.
Our recent community connection trips have helped lay the groundwork.
Now we get to bring more of that learning into one space.

A map can tell us where a community is.
It can't tell us what that community needs.

That's why BFF has been making community connection a priority.
Our recent trips have given us the opportunity to meet people where they are and learn directly from those who understand their communities best.
We are hearing about the realities faced by families.
We're learning from doulas and birth workers.
We're connecting with organizations and community care providers.
And we're looking at the strengths that already exist.
This work helps us ask better questions:
What support is already available?
Where are the gaps?
What would make a meaningful difference?
Who needs to be at the table?
And how can BFF contribute without duplicating what is already being done?
We believe communities should help shape the programs designed to serve them.
That's the work of community connection.

We are inviting you to join us on Salt Spring Island on October 16 for a community panel discussion exploring the perinatal and postpartum needs of island families and the gaps they experience in accessing care and support.

October 16, 2026

Time: 12pm to 4pm

Location: Lions’ Club 103 Bonnet Ave Saltspring Island V8K2K8

This will be an opportunity to come together, connect, listen, share knowledge and continue conversations about what the vulnerable families and communities on island need — and how we can work together toward meaningful change.

This gathering has been made possible through funding from the Salt Spring Island Foundation, as part of a larger support network to strengthen connections between families, doulas, community care providers, organizations and the people working to improve birth and family support in the community, and we are incredibly grateful for that support.

Today, we listen.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
It is a day to honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the ongoing impacts of residential schools on Indigenous Peoples, families and communities.

At Birthing Families Foundation, we believe that meaningful community work requires us to understand the history that brought us here — and to recognize that health, birth and family experiences cannot be separated from the systems and relationships that surround them.

Today is not about rushing toward reconciliation.
It is about listening.
Learning.
Remembering.
Reflecting.
And committing to doing better.

We honour Survivors and their families, and we recognize the importance of continuing the work of truth and reconciliation every day — not only on September 30.

On this International Safe Abortion Day, the SOGC is calling on provincial and territorial governments in Canada to protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health care across the country. Too many women in Canada continue to face barriers to reproductive care because services are unavailable close to home, particularly in rural and remote communities. A right to abortion means little if a woman must travel long distances, take time off work, pay out of pocket or wait too long to receive care.

No woman should be left without safe options to exercise her right to bodily autonomy, no matter where she lives.

At Birthing Families Foundation, we believe that improving care for families starts with listening to the people who are part of the care system every day.

We’re asking you to take a few minutes to complete our community needs surveys for the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island (including the Gulf Islands):

This survey will help us better understand:
🔸What needs and gaps you are seeing among families in your community
🔸Where existing services and supports are working well
🔸Where families are experiencing barriers or unmet needs
🔸How care providers and community organizations could work together more effectively
🔸What kinds of education, connection, resources, or programming would be useful
🔸Where BFF and our community partners may be able to contribute to filling gaps

You don't need to be a BFF partner or a BFF doula to participate. If your work connects you with families during pregnancy, birth, the postpartum period, or early parenthood, we want to hear from you!

Labour Day is a good day to talk about the work of caring.
Birth work is work.
Parenting is work.
Supporting families is work.
Building healthier communities is work.
And so much of the work that makes families and communities stronger happens quietly — through listening, showing up, sharing knowledge, providing support and making connections.

At Birthing Families Foundation, we believe that families deserve access to meaningful support regardless of their circumstances, and that the people doing the work of supporting families deserve to be valued, supported and heard too.

Today, we recognize the many forms of labour that help families thrive — both the work we see and the work that often goes unseen.
Happy Labour Day, Canada. ❤️

Good programming doesn't begin with us deciding what a community needs.
It begins with listening.

Over the summer, BFF has been connecting with communities, meeting with people doing the work, hearing about the realities families are experiencing and learning about the gaps, strengths and possibilities that exist in different places.

Because communities are not one-size-fits-all.
What works in one community may not be what another community needs.
Our goal is to make sure the programming we develop and support is responsive, relevant and grounded in the lived realities of the people and communities we serve.

And we want to hear from you.

A community survey will be coming shortly, giving families, doulas, community care providers and others an opportunity to help shape where BFF goes next.
Your experience matters. Your voice matters. And your input helps build better programs.
Watch for the survey — and please share it when it arrives.

Update!! So far we have had amazing interactions in Saltspring Island and Victoria community. Thank you everybody who has joined us so far!

Today’s event in Nanaimo has sadly been cancelled due to ferry difficulties. ( )

Everyone is also free to join us tomorrow at 2 PM at Twisted Willow studio in Port Alberni, or at 1pm at miracle Beach in Campbell River! Looking forward to connecting with more of our community members and colleagues! Your feedback is extremely valuable and welcome!
