To learn more, please contact Troy at [email protected] or 250-661-3226. In 2005, after a decade of teaching I (Troy Harris, Executive Director of CanWES) was ready for a new challenge in my life. I knew that I wanted to help people in some way, yet I had no clear concept of where my efforts were needed most. In order to better understand how to help, I felt that I needed to see, first hand, the dif

ficulties people faced. As a result, I took a leave of absence and traveled through 11 countries on a journey around the globe. Although I saw significant need for help in many places, it was in the mountains of Nepal that I realized what I wanted to do. During my 3 week trek in the Himalayas my companion and guide, Mahindra Dahal, taught me a great deal about Nepalese culture. He explained that many students travel 1-2 hours a day to get to school, and as a result, parents encourage them to stay home and help with working the fields. As a child, Mahindra and his family were forced to leave their community as a result of these conditions. In the end, Mahindra became a fully trained teacher but couldn’t find employment because the Nepalese government gives teaching positions to unqualified people for both personal and political gain. As I listened to his stories, I was saddened by the fact that so many children in Nepal were being deprived of the knowledge and passion teachers like Mahindra could offer. He and I agreed that if schools were readily accessible, and qualified teachers were placed in the classrooms, it would greatly benefit both individuals and their communities. As my travels continued it became apparent that it was necessary to make education available not just in Nepal, but in many developing nations. CanWES (www.canwes.org) is now a registered non-profit society in British Columbia with a board of directors that are committed to improving access to education in developing regions; we will assist in overcoming existing barriers to education. Our goal is to provide communities with the opportunities to build and operate schools. CanWES strives to improve the future for all youth regardless of ability, gender, or socio-economic status. It is our vision, through education, to enable students to make viable, sustainable, and ethical choices regarding their future. We would like to thank you in advance for your interest and support. AUGUST 15, 2026
Happy 19th Anniversary to the Canadian World Education Society!

Thanks to our entire CanWES Family and Friends for their never ending support and contributions. It’s this generosity that has allowed our grassroots volunteer based organization the opportunity to achieve our goals of helping provide quality education to youth around the world.

As the Founder and Executive Director of CanWES, I am truly grateful for the generosity of everyone who has contributed to the success of our endeavours since the vision began in early 2006.

Since our inception into the non-profit world on August 15, 2007, the CanWES Family, volunteers, and its contributors together have raised countless dollars to help operate and upkeep the Everest English School in Sanitar, Nepal, as well as provide scholarships for graduating students here in Victoria. It’s important to remember that the funds raised for our global initiatives have changed the lives of impoverished youth in Nepal and helped to provide incredible learning opportunities for young people and their families.

As we step forward into our twentieth year of operation, I reflect on how fortunate I have been to have had the unwavering support for all these years. I could not be more proud of what we have all accomplished together. It is my hope that The Canadian World Education Society and its “CanWES family” can continue to support the Everest English School in Sanitar, Nepal as well as graduating students from schools across the Greater Victoria area achieve their dreams for many years to come.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at our next event in a little less than a month.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who chose to support CanWES and our annual Mother’s Day hanging basket fundraising initiative! 💐

It was another huge success and it was SO enjoyable to see many of our supporters, in person, at our basket pick-up last Thursday in Royal Bay!

This year our already generous sponsor and flower basket creators, C&C Growers, have topped up our fundraising efforts by gifting us an EXTRA $5 for EVERY basket sold!

As always, CanWES is grateful for your generous support and donations! Every dollar counts and goes directly to our “Everest English School” in Nepal.
