Victoria Military Music Festival

Victoria Military Music Festival The Victoria Military Music Festival Society was established in 1993.

The Society has been fortunate to engage with many performers from across Canada and the international sphere and has hosted two highly successful military tattoos. Working with a variety of diverse community partners, including government and non-government organizations and agencies, we develop artistic and related programs that provide an appreciation for the musical, military and physical skil

ls of local, provincial, national Canadian Armed Forces, and the Armed Forces of other countries. We especially encourage the development of opportunities to promote the musical, military and physical skills of local Regular, Reserve and affiliated Cadet unit bands. Through our musical programs we support organizations whose programs support individuals, couples, spouses, surviving spouses, and children of those who serve or have served our country and communities.

On Victoria Day Weekend, three regimental pipe bands from the Canadian Armed Forces performed together as the Canadian Army Pipes and Drums:
- The Cameron Highlanders of Canada, Winnipeg, MB
- Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, Vancouver, BC
- The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s), Victoria, BC
These historic regiments share the proud history going back to the First World War, and specifically the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish), Canadian Expeditionary Force. The last occasion members of the three regimental pipe bands performed together in Victoria was in 2012.

🌳🥁We are excited to begin plans for a commemorative walking tour led by Pipe Major Roger McGuire next summer. Along the way, we also plan to premiere some thoughtful original music by local youth composers to recognize some of the Pipers of the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish). 🇨🇦

Thank you Veterans Affairs Canada Commemorative Partnership Program for supporting this exciting project.

Planning for our 2026 season is well under way and will feature a massed pipe band representing the regiments which comprised the 16th Battalion, CEF, the predecessor to todays Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's). In addition to the CScotR, the band will include representatives of the Seaforth Highlanders, the 48th Highlanders and the Cameron Highlanders of Canada.

This article from the Legion magazine provides some insight in to the role of piper during WWI

It was Oct. 8, 1916, and the Battle of the Somme had been raging for more than three months. Allied forces were making their final push against fierce German defences dug in at Regina Trench on the heights overlooking the Ancre river valley.
