About the Chris Spencer Foundation:
In 1873, Welsh immigrant David Spencer opened a department store which became a local institution in Victoria, BC. Known locally as Spencer's, the enterprise grew to include multiple locations across the province before being sold to the T. Eaton Company in 1948.
Chris Spencer, one of David Spencer & Emma Lazenbyβs thirteen children, joined the family business and became president of the company when his father died in 1920. βMr. Chrisβ as he was called, was known for his public spirit and kindness. He was an early supporter of the University of British Columbia and was on the Board of Governors from 1921-1936, and founded the Chris Spencer Foundation in 1949, with a mandate to provide funds for charitable organizations whose objectives are to improve the lives of Canadian youth.
