What does it mean to be a Ukrainian newcomer in Alberta?

Horizons of Belonging follows four Ukrainian families over the course of a year in Edmonton and Calgary as they rebuild their lives after escaping Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Through deeply personal stories of displacement, resilience, and identity, the film explores what it means to be a Ukrainian today—and what it truly means to start over in a new country.

Q&A with Oleksandr Pankieiev – Co-Director

We are excited to soon host our second annual Unity Shabbat! Register via the Linktree in bio.

This event, born out of concerns for rising antisemitism and anti-Ukrainian rhetoric, is a chance to celebrate the unity between our communities by highlighting the struggles and resilience of our two peoples. We hope that the dinner will inspire hope for a brighter future both on campus and in wider circles!

On behalf of Hillel on Campus and the Ukrainian Students’ Society at UVic, our two clubs are collaborating to host a Unity Shabbat dinner on Friday, March 21st at 7 pm to raise money for Project Kesher (in support of the work this organization does for women in both Israel and Ukraine). REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Join us for a night of connection, Jewish and Ukrainian cuisine, and inter-community solidarity! We look forward to seeing everyone there 🇺🇦🇮🇱

This is a registration only event so if you want to participate, please make sure you register using this link: https://forms.office.com/r/BQSdPNVeFY
We will be collecting donations at the door, so we ask that if you can, please be prepared to make a donation (cash and card welcomed).

UVic Ukrainian Student Society

The formation of this club began thanks to one particularly passionate Ukrainian Canadian student while she finished her final year of undergraduate studies in Applied Theatre at the University of Victoria. Devon Goldie had already succeeded in writing and producing a powerful new play about the struggles of an immigrant Ukrainian Canadian family, “Pom ‘Yat: To Remember”, but she was not done sharing her heritage. With the help of her eccentric cast, all of whom shared Devon’s love of pirogies, folk music, and vinoks, the UVic Ukrainian Student Society was formed.

The purpose of this club is not to isolate members of the Ukrainian Canadian community, but rather to grow and share our culture with anyone wishing to join. You do not have to be of Ukrainian descent or have any preexisting knowledge of the country in order to participate, and we encourage those from all countries and all cultures to become a part of our society, because we are stronger together.

Since the club is so young, we aim to focus on smaller, manageable events in our first years running. Such events will include Varenyky and Vodka nights, pysanka and kolach tutorials as the holidays approach, and fundraisers for both us and our family overseas that will allow us to collaborate with other groups and clubs. Ideas and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

We hope to kick off a wonderful first year of operation, and we cannot wait to share our culture with you. Be kind, be merry, and be well.
