The CAA/ACA regrets to inform members of the passing of Dr. Roy L. Carlson, a foundational figure at SFU and a giant in Pacific Northwest archaeology.

Dr. Carlson spearheaded the founding of the Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University in 1969, founded the SFU Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, initiated the SFU field school program, and launched SFU Archaeology Press. He taught thousands of archaeology students over the course of his life, and his contributions as a mentor and supervisor will continue to extend beyond is years.

We were honoured to present the Smith-Wintemberg Award to Dr. Carlson in 1995 at the CAA Annual meeting in Kelowna, BC.
The archaeology community mourns his loss.
