Immigration policy should never put s*x workers at greater risk of harm.

Did you know that Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) restrict people without permanent residence from working in the s*x industry?

These rules are often presented as a way to protect migrant workers and address trafficking. But in reality, they can create additional vulnerabilities for im/migrant s*x workers.

When someone’s immigration status can be threatened because of their work, that fear can be used against them. It can make people more vulnerable to violence, exploitation, robbery, surveillance, racial profiling, and interactions with police or the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

The legal protections available to sx workers who earn income through their own services or advertising their own services also do not extend in the same way to migrant sx workers without permanent residence.

This isn't protection. Policies that increase vulnerability aren't protecting workers.

Peers Victoria Resources Society and Sacred are both members of the Canadian Alliance for S*x Work Law Reform (CASWLR). We support the repeal of IRPR provisions that prevent im/migrant workers from participating in the s*x industry.

CASWLR advocates for a rights-based approach that addresses coercion and exploitation through existing laws, while protecting the human and labour rights of s*x workers.

Im/migrant s*x workers deserve safety, dignity, and access to justice — not policies that make them more vulnerable.

Naloxone is safe, easy to use, and can temporarily reverse an opioid poisoning while you wait for emergency help. Keep a kit on hand, know where to get one, and make sure the people around you know how to use it too.

Did you know that Peers is part of a global movement advancing sx workers' human rights?

We're proud members of the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW) and GAATW Canada—a network of more than 100 organizations working to uphold the rights of people impacted by trafficking while recognizing the important distinction between consensual sx work and human trafficking.

GAATW approaches trafficking through the broader contexts of labour, migration, and human rights, advocating for evidence-based responses that center the voices and rights of those most affected.

They also publish the *Anti-Trafficking Review*—the first open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to human trafficking. With more than 25 issues exploring topics at the intersection of trafficking, labour, gender, migration, and anti-trafficking responses, it's an invaluable resource for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding.
