Coming soon to the Yakimovich Wellness Centre: Addressing Inequities in Dementia Care Through Community-Led Approaches: A Focus on BC’s Chinese Community (June 11, 1-3 p.m.)

Canadians living with dementia – and those who care for them – need more supports that truly enhance their quality of life. For individuals from ethno-racial communities in Canada, accessing these supports can be especially challenging due to systemic inequities, including racism, language barriers, and cultural stigma surrounding dementia. In this session, Dr. Mariko Sakamoto will share insights from an innovative, nationally led project focused on developing meaningful quality-of-life supports for people living with dementia and their care partners in underserved but equity-deserving communities across Canada, with a focus on Black, Chinese, and South Asian communities. At the Yakimovich Wellness Centre this week: Older Adults in the Emergency Department: Experiences, Gaps, and Better Ways Forward (May 28, 1-3 p.m.)

This educational session is designed for older adults, caregivers, healthcare providers, and members of the public interested in improving emergency care for aging populations. Led by Mariko Sakamoto and Jae-Yung Kwon, the session will explore how older adults and their care partners experience care in emergency departments. Drawing on patient-oriented research, lived-experience workshops, patient narratives, and a rapid review of the literature, the session highlights a growing mismatch between emergency departments designed for speed and efficiency and the complex needs of older patients. “Everyone has a life story worth sharing” says Wendy Margetts, a retired social worker and facilitator of the upcoming Finding the Wisdom in our Stories sessions at the Yakimovich Wellness Centre. Sessions like this are also known as a life review group, a collaborative process that allows seniors to share stories, validate their personal histories, and find renewed purpose in their later years. “People always say the loveliest things after, and there are so many positive outcomes for members of the group – from a chance to process grief or regret, increasing memory recall to just having an opportunity to socialize. All of these are important for older adults, and it’s great to have a place to offer free sessions like this,” says Wendy. Sessions run June 10, 17, 24 and July 8. Coming soon at the Yakimovich Wellness Centre: Sudden confusion in older adults can be alarming. It can also be a sign of delirium, a condition that is more common and more serious than many realize. In this session, we’ll break down what delirium is and who is most at risk. Most importantly, we’ll equip you with actionable prevention strategies to better protect yourself and the seniors you care about. Adult Day Programs are a vital service for seniors who are aging at home. With your donations, Eldercare Foundation funds programming for older adults that are intended to help stave off loneliness, offer a chance to socialize and participate in recreational therapy programs while giving respite for caregivers.

On Monday, May 11, Adult Day Programs at The Summit celebrated Mother's Day with high tea and tunes. Singer and guitarist Ron Ogden serenaded the crowd with sweet songs, allowing participants were to indulge in singing and dancing alongside their cucumber sandwiches and petit fours - all served on real china.

Because of our incredible donors, moments like this are made possible not just at the Summit, but in Adult Day Programs across the Island. Thank you for helping us bring connection, conversation and kindness alongside the power of live music through events that are truly special for everyone involved.

Did you Know?
May is Leave a Legacy Month in Canada, a time to shine a spotlight on the importance and impact of leaving charitable donations in your will. Creating a bequest to Eldercare Foundation (or another charity of your choice 😊) is easy, and it can also benefit you and your loved ones. By leaving a gift in your will, you may be able to offer more support than you ever thought possible, all while ensuring your loved ones are well looked after. Bequests can also reduce estate taxes while creating a big impact. Our warmest thanks to those donors who have shared a gift to us in their will. It is such a powerful statement and a way for your legacy to live on through improving the quality of life of Island seniors 💚.
