Victoria Brain Injury Society

Victoria Brain Injury Society We believe in a better future for brain injury survivors. The Victoria Brain Injury Society (VBIS) At VBIS, there are people who get it. You’re not alone.

Our mission is to support, educate, and advocate for brain injury survivors and their families. In doing so, we strive to increase community awareness about brain injuries and reduce the harmful stigma experienced by survivors. Acquired brain injury (ABI) results from damage to the brain that occurs after birth – and no two injuries are alike. To meet the diverse needs of our community, we offer i

ndividual support, peer support, family support, and various group programs. We assist people who’ve experienced concussions, strokes, aneurysms, and countless other types of ABI. We’re here to help you recover, adapt, and adjust; regain independence; and develop a secure sense of community. To learn more about VBIS and how you can support our mission, visit www.vbis.ca

🧠 Brain Fact Friday
Did you know music activates multiple regions of the brain at once? 🎶

Listening to music engages brain areas and networks involved in memory, emotion, attention, movement and language. This is why a familiar song can bring back memories, influence how we feel or make us want to move along with the beat.
Music can also offer meaningful opportunities for connection, expression and engagement for people affected by brain injury. ✨

BRAIN FACT FRIDAY 🧠 Did You Know:
Brain injury recovery isn’t always a straight line.

Progress may slow down or seem to plateau for a period of time — but that doesn’t necessarily mean recovery has stopped. With time, support, rehabilitation, new strategies, and continued practice, new improvements can still happen.
Every brain injury — and every recovery journey — is different.

At VBIS, we’re here to support people living with brain injury through every stage of recovery.

🧠 Moving your body benefits your brain, too!
Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, helping deliver the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function. Regular movement is also associated with benefits for mood, memory and overall brain health.

And movement doesn’t have to mean an intense workout. Walking is an accessible way to get moving while building routine and connecting with others. 👟

☀️ Join us Mondays for our Westshore Walking Group — and while our summer giveaway is running, participants will also be entered for a chance to win a Starbucks tumbler!

How are you getting moving this summer? Let us know below. 👇

🧠 Brain Fact Friday 🧠

🤯 Did you know your brain can’t actually feel pain?

Sounds impossible, right? Your brain processes every ache, burn, and bruise you experience—but the brain itself has no pain receptors, meaning it can’t feel pain directly.

So why do headaches hurt? The pain comes from the blood vessels, muscles, nerves, and protective tissues surrounding your brain—not the brain itself.

This is one reason some brain surgeries can be performed while a patient is awake, allowing surgeons to monitor important functions like speech and movement in real time.

💬 Were you surprised by this fact? Let us know in the comments!

Every Friday, we share fascinating facts to help raise awareness about brain health and brain injury.
