⭐️Award for Emerging Artists–Recipient Spotlight⭐️

Congratulations to Elizabeth Hrushowy (she/her), who received $3,000 through the CDP—Training to continue her dance training with Elephant in the Black Box (EBB) Junior Company in the south of France.

Elizabeth is a 22-year-old dancer originally from Vancouver, B.C., who previously trained in the Pre-Professional Program at Vanleena Dance Academy in North Vancouver. She has continued her development through numerous high-level programs and intensives across North America and Europe, including the Nacho Duato Trainee Program and Oregon Ballet Theatre School. Alongside her pre-professional studies at EBB, she is currently working toward her Diplomas of Choreographic Studies (D.E.C.) in both classical and contemporary dance through the Conservatory Pau-Béarn-Pyrénées.

Elizabeth shares, "I am overwhelmingly grateful for the support and honour of receiving this scholarship from Dance Victoria. I deeply appreciate the jury’s belief in me as an artist and their support of this next stage in my career."

Thank you to the artists of and O.Dela Arts for an inspiring and unforgettable weekend.

Through the beautiful triple-bill program Zaagi’idiwin: Our Mothering Heart, community workshops, and the Talking Truths Circle, the festival created space for powerful storytelling, meaningful conversations, and connection through dance.

A special thank you to the Lekwungen Traditional Dancers for welcoming the artists and community to lək̓ʷəŋən territory for welcoming the artists at our Quadra Village Studios.

We are grateful to our community for showing up, engaging deeply, and helping us welcome Matriarchs Uprising to Victoria for the first time.

"As a Winnipeg kid, seeing Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s "Nutcracker" each holiday season was pure magic—and my very first introduction to dance. It left an indelible mark on me. Now, living in Victoria, it feels so special to experience that same beloved tradition with my young daughter, especially with the incredible live music of the Victoria Symphony. Being able to pass that gift of wonder on to her feels truly full circle."

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, Dance Victoria recognizes and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, knowledge systems, and ongoing contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Today at DV Studios, we're honoured to have Visible Bodies Collective, in collaboration with Vitor Frietas, presenting ""Sentience of the UnEarthed."" The piece explores spiritual expansion, ancestral connection, and the transformative power of the body.

Visible Bodies is an Indigenous-led IBPOC group that uses performance to express embodied stories through theatrical experiences. The collective engages in research, training, creation, and performance, with an emphasis on somatic processing and structured improvisation. We invite the community to join us in witnessing this performance.

In this live instalment of ""The Talking S**t Show"", Artistic Director Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg combines dance-theatre, elements of stand-up comedy, vibes of late-night talk shows, and raucous daytime TV energy. The performance features local community dancers who participated in Cheyenne Friedenberg's Artist Residency at DV Studios.⁠

The project will shine an unconventional spotlight on artists: the ‘sh*t’ we make up, and the ‘sh*t’ we deal with along the way, while nurturing a platform for audience/witnesses and other artists to challenge, confront, rage, and love together in the presence of each other.⁠

Caregiver and Child Workshop with Olivia C. Davies 📅 June 20, 10–11:30 am

No dance experience necessary! Caregivers and their children explore the Seven Sacred Teachings through movement, storytelling, animal totems, and creative dance.

Choreographic Methods with Samantha Sutherland 📅 June 20, 1:30–2:30 pm

Advanced contemporary dance class exploring memory, cycles, connection to land, and embodied storytelling. Through embodied prompts and visceral imagery, participants will move and reflect in connection to the choreographic themes of Samantha Sutherland's work, naⱡa.

We are thrilled to announce this year's four recipients of the prestigious Chrystal Dance Prize (CDP) – Training and the Arabella and Robert Award for Dance (ARAD). These two annual awards support emerging dance artists in pursuing international training and professional development.

Congratulations to:

⭐️ Elizabeth Hrushowy (she/her) from Vancouver, B.C., who was awarded $3,000 through the CDP–Training. She will continue training with Elephant in the Black Box Junior Company (France).

⭐️ Clara Keefer-Urquhart (she/her) from Ladysmith, B.C., who was awarded $3,000 through the CDP–Training. She will continue her postgraduate studies at VERVE, Northern School of Contemporary Dance (United Kingdom).

⭐️ Amélie MacDonald (she/her) from Victoria, B.C., who was awarded $1,500 through the CDP–Training. She will continue training at Re.Search Professional Dance Program (Italy).

⭐️ Gemma Ritchie (she/her) from North Vancouver, B.C., who was awarded $4,800 through the ARAD to begin her Bachelor of Arts in Ballet and Contemporary Dance at The Rambert School of Contemporary Ballet (United Kingdom).

A heartfelt thank you to Dance Victoria Residency Artist Idan Cohen, Artistic Director of Ne.Sans Opera & Dance, dance artists Emma Galvin and Will Jessup, cellist Joanne Jiang, and the local dancers who joined us for the Rough Cut showing of "Bach Dances" last week.

It was a privilege to witness this work-in-progress take shape during Idan’s stay at DV Studios, and to share in the creative process alongside such talented artists.

Matriarchs Uprising festival premieres in Victoria this weekend, from June 18–20.

Join us at our Quadra Village Studios on June 19 + 20 for "Zaagi’idiwin: Our Mothering Heart", a triple-bill by choreographers Samantha Sutherland, Sophie Dow, and Olivia C. Davies. Please note that the Saturday performance will also include a post-show conversation and Q&A with the artists.

Alongside performances, the festival offers community workshops and circle conversations led by Indigenous artists, fostering connection and knowledge-sharing among participants.

Join DV Residency Artist Tara Cheyenne Performance (Vancouver) for a live instalment of "The Talking S**t Show" at DV Studios on June 26 at 12:00 pm.
