Madeleine is a nine-year-old little girl from Victoria, British Columbia. Because of her underlying rare form of arthrogryposis, two surgeries to manage her scoliosis and kyphosis were unsuccessful. Choking is a serious and life threatening concern. Arthrogryposis is a very complex condition requiring a surgeon has experience and expertise operating on children with this disease. Only corrective s
urgery and effective post-surgical therapy can remedy Madeleine’s neck and yet no surgeon in Canada has ever seen a case like Madeleine presents. Her parent’s have found a doctor in Florida who is a deformity surgeon with experience treating kids like Madeleine. At the Paley institute, under Dr. Feldman’s excellent care, Madeleine has a chance for a normal life. The longer corrective surgery is delayed, the less chance of success. The cost is well beyond the Murray family means. They have re-mortgaged their home and sold their life insurance policy but have only managed to pay for the first of Madeleine’s two required corrective surgeries and post-surgery rehabilitation. They leave for Florida on October 8 and her first surgery is scheduled for Oct 14. They can’t afford to go and can’t afford to stay. We can help this formerly vivacious little girl enjoy the quality of life she once knew.
