Anniversary of Trauma and Anniversary Reactions

As we go through the 28th and the reminder of June 28th, 2022, lingers on our hearts and our small police departments and families – I wanted to write to you on the Anniversary of Trauma in our little policing community. Four years ago, our worlds were rocked like never before. Things like this don’t happen in our sleepy little town, is something we all thought. But our heroes are all still with us in person today and that is all that matters.

If you feel like today is to much for you – please reach out. We are here to support you and your families.

Today, on **June 27 – PTSD Awareness Day**, we stand beside the police officers, dispatchers, paramedics, firefighters, correctional officers, military members, and the families who carry the weight of trauma alongside them.

PTSD doesn’t always look the way people expect. Sometimes it looks like exhaustion. Hypervigilance. Sleepless nights. Anxiety over a loved one walking out the door for another shift. It can be silence, anger, withdrawal, or simply trying to make it through another day.

For police families, the impacts of trauma are often shared. We witness the changes, help carry the burdens, celebrate the victories, and stand beside our loved ones through the hardest moments. We know that healing isn’t linear, and no one should have to walk that journey alone.

At Vancouver Island Beyond the Blue we are committed to creating a community where first responders and their families know they are seen, heard, and supported. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness—it is an act of courage.

Today, we encourage everyone to check in on someone. Reach out. Start a conversation. Listen without judgment. Together, we can continue to break the stigma surrounding PTSD and remind those who are struggling that there is hope, healing, and a community standing beside them.

Over the past few weeks, Canadians have watched far too many headlines involving violence, shootings, and lives lost. Most recently, we have seen police officers killed in the line of duty and communities forever changed by acts of violence.

Behind every headline is a family waiting for someone to come home.

A spouse wondering why the shift is running late.

Children waiting for a parent at the dinner table.

Partners, friends, coworkers, dispatchers, paramedics, firefighters, and police officers carrying the weight of what they have seen and experienced.

For those who serve, these incidents are not just stories on the news. They are reminders of the realities faced every day by first responders across Canada. They are also reminders of the invisible toll carried by the families who stand beside them.

Today, we hold space for the officers, first responders, and civilians who have lost their lives. We think of those recovering from physical and psychological injuries. We think of the colleagues who answered the calls, the dispatchers who stayed on the line, and the loved ones left trying to make sense of the unimaginable.

To our first responder community: check in with one another. Have the conversation. Reach out when you are struggling. Support is not a sign of weakness—it is a sign of strength.

To the families: your sacrifices often happen quietly, behind the scenes, but they matter. We see you.

No uniform, badge, headset, or title makes someone immune to grief.

Take care of yourselves and each other.

💙 To our police families,

Today, many of you are carrying something heavy.

You are watching your loved one leave for work and wondering if they will come home safely. You are seeing the headlines, hearing the news, reading the comments, and feeling a fear that few outside our community truly understand.

For some, that fear is new. For others, it is a feeling that never really goes away.

Behind every police officer is a family that serves too - a spouse who waits, children who worry, parents who pray, siblings who hold their breath, and loved ones who quietly carry the weight of a profession they never signed up for, but wholeheartedly support.

In moments like these, it is normal to feel afraid. It is normal to feel angry. It is normal to feel overwhelmed by uncertainty and grief.

Please know this:

You are not alone.

Canada Beyond the Blue was created by police families, for police families. We understand the sacrifices, the sleepless nights, the heartbreak, and the strength it takes to stand behind the badge.

If you are struggling, if you need support, or if you simply need someone who understands, please reach out.

Tonight, we hold close the families who are grieving, the officers who continue to serve, and every loved one waiting for a safe return home.

We stand together. We grieve together. We support one another.

Because no police family should ever have to carry this burden alone. 💙🇨🇦

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder affects not only first responders, military members, and frontline workers—but also the families who love and support them.

This month, we stand together to raise awareness, break the stigma, and honor the courage it takes to seek help and heal. 💪

To every spouse, partner, child, and loved one walking this journey alongside someone with PTSD: You are not alone. Your strength matters. Your voice matters. You matter.

✨ Let’s keep the conversation going.

1 in 4.
That’s how many of us will face a mental health challenge in our lifetime.

But behind the numbers are real people — friends, coworkers, siblings, partners.

Let’s check in. Let’s listen. Let’s normalize the conversation. 💙

Because no one should have to walk this path alone.

🌸 Happy Mother’s Day to All the Incredible Moms 🌸

Today, we celebrate every form of motherhood — birth mothers, adoptive moms, stepmoms, grandmothers, chosen moms, mother figures, and those who hold a mother’s love in their heart, whether their children are near, far, here, or remembered. Your love, strength, wisdom, and care shape lives and hold families together in ways that words can hardly express. You are seen. You are appreciated. You are loved. 💐

A special and heartfelt thank you goes out to all the police spouses and partners — especially the mothers among you — who shoulder an extraordinary kind of strength. While your loved ones serve and protect, you are the steady hand and the quiet courage behind the scenes. You manage the chaos, soothe the worry, and still manage to give love, guidance, and grace to your families. On this day, and every day, your sacrifices and resilience do not go unnoticed. Thank you for all you do. 💙

Wishing love and peace to all mothers today — in every beautiful form you come in.
