From now until the end of the Pollinator Month of June voting is open to determine BC’s Favourite Bee!
Today we are featuring The Bumbler: Bombus vancouverensis, the Vancouver Bumblebee. With two colour patterns to choose from (stunning red black and yellow or striking yellow and black), this busy gal can be found throughout the province. Bee Atlas Volunteers have recorded her visiting more than 32 species of flowers. With a queen and colony to support, these bees are busy gals throughout the season!
Our Champion for this bee contestant is Matt Young who says “I vote for Bombus vancouverensis because there’s more to this bee than meets the eye. Found across western North America, the Vancouver bumblebee comes in more than one look: some wear yellow and black, while others sport yellow, black, and red coats depending on where they’re found. In fact, the red-haired morph was once thought to be a completely different species — talk about a cryptic queen! Vancouver bumblebees are also one of only two known bumblebee species that use pheromones for kin recognition. And really, how could we not pick a bee named after BC’s most popular city?”
