From now until the end of the Pollinator Month of June voting is open to determine BC’s Favourite Bee!
Today we are featuring The Bumbler: Bombus vancouverensis, the Vancouver Bumblebee. With two colour patterns to choose from (stunning red black and yellow or striking yellow and black), this busy gal can be found throughout the province. Bee Atlas Volunteers have recorded her visiting more than 32 species of flowers. With a queen and colony to support, these bees are busy gals throughout the season!
Our Champion for this bee contestant is Matt Young who says “I vote for Bombus vancouverensis because there’s more to this bee than meets the eye. Found across western North America, the Vancouver bumblebee comes in more than one look: some wear yellow and black, while others sport yellow, black, and red coats depending on where they’re found. In fact, the red-haired morph was once thought to be a completely different species — talk about a cryptic queen! Vancouver bumblebees are also one of only two known bumblebee species that use pheromones for kin recognition. And really, how could we not pick a bee named after BC’s most popular city?”

Genera Highlight! BC only has 3 species of Heriades. These Armoured Resin Bees are all black with only a tiny bit of white hair on their abdomens in little stripes that makes them somewhat inconspicuous when collecting pollen and nectar from the many flowers they visit. They’re small, only 4-7mm, and active mostly mid to late summer. They have interesting nesting habits; usually nesting in existing cavities, beetle burrows in old wood, and sealing their nests with plant resin. What’s interesting is that even when resources are plentiful they will still break into other Heriades nests and steal resources, sometimes emptying the whole cell and replacing everything!
This genera profile, and others are currently available for download on our website. https://www.bcnativebees.org/native-bee-genera-profiles
This portion of the Native Bee Genera Profile project is made possible by The Entomological Society of British Columbia with support from Oregon Department of Agriculture.

Today we are featuring The Builder: Ceratina acantha, the Small Carpenter Bee. Small enough to nest in a stem, this gal works hard chewing out the pith from plants such as Rubus, Ribes, and Sambucus. She creates a series of nest cells, separated by walls of pith, and will guard her young by resting with her blunt butt plugging the nest entrance. Easy to miss as she zips from flower to flower, a close look reveals a shiny blue-black beauty.
Our Champion for this bee contestant is Lori Weidenhammer who says she’s voting for the Small Carpenter Bee because “Who is this Micro-Metal Diva? Ceratina acantha is bringing you GOAT girl power in the tiniest of packages. She is your snatched tiny shiny homie, giving Dark Academia Goth. She’s an epic superhero, yeeting those other (ugh) basic bees outta the park. Yo, it’s not pulp fiction, she’s the pith chewing stem nester with the Best Bedonka B***y. Don’t mess with her nest, or you’ll get a face full of her Bodacious Back Door. She's shiny, tiny and spiny and she's a winner, baby.”
