Help Raise $12K for Kids in K-12! 💛
As the new school year approaches, the Shelbourne Community Kitchen is launching its Raise $12K for Kids in K-12 back-to-school campaign, running August 17 to September 7.
For families already carefully balancing rent, groceries, transportation and other rising costs, the return to school can bring a wave of added expenses. Let’s work together to help ensure local children have the food and resources they need to start the school year ready to learn, grow and thrive.
With a goal of raising at least $12,000, the campaign will provide nutritious food, school supplies and family supports throughout the school year, including:
School Lunch Supply Stock-Ups in September and January
Family Dinners
Nutritious after-school snacks
Early Literacy Book Bags
Backpacks and school supplies
Crafts and special giveaways
More than 1,000 children are supported through Shelbourne Community Kitchen’s services. Together, we can ease some of the pressure on families facing rising food and living costs and help make sure kids have what they need to thrive.
There are many ways to support the campaign:

Happy International Youth Day!

Did you know that more than 1,000 youth and children access services at Shelbourne Community Kitchen, either independently or through their caregivers?

There is a lot that youth can teach us, and our team is eager to learn! This spring, we worked alongside our youth members to co-create and pilot our new “Skills and Skilletz” after-school cooking program. The program was a great success, and we’re excited to run the second edition soon! If you or someone you know is between the ages of 12 and 17, loves to cook, and would like to volunteer, we would love to connect! Please contact us at [email protected]

Welcome to the Cedar Hill Garden!

With growing space generously shared by our friends at St.Luke’s Anglican Church, the Shelbourne Community Kitchen’s Cedar Hill Garden site helps to grow beautiful fresh produce for our Pantry Program. From fruits to herbs to veggies, this 250 pot container garden site is a great example of urban agriculture in action! .

Wandering through the garden, there is beautifully sustainable lettuce. This plant grows bushier and bigger the more we seem to harvest it, which is a fantastic source of salad greens for The Pantry! With recent harvests of fresh herbs such as parsley, dill and cilantro; heaps of lettuce; and the soon-to-be-ready tomatoes, zucchini, and peas- The Cedar Hill Garden is brimming with tasty and nutritious produce.

From installing trellises to help peas climb, to using a unique paprika blend to naturally keep pests at bay, our volunteers and Canada Summer Jobs assistant, Tessa, are always finding new ways to help our gardens thrive.

Want to see it for yourself?
We're thrilled that Cedar Hill Garden is one of seven featured gardens in this year's Victoria Urban Food Garden Tour! Join us on September 12 to learn about and explore the many ways that people grow food in the city. All proceeds from the event are in support of our food security work at Shelbourne Community Kitchen!
Tickets are available through .food.garden.tour, and if you're unable to attend, you can also sponsor a ticket for someone else to attend and you’ll receive a charitable donation receipt!

For the fourth year in a row, we are so excited to be hosting our Elders' Kitchen program in collaboration with the BC Farmers Market Nutrition coupon program! 💜

At every session, participants are served a delicious lunch prepared by volunteers led by our Community Chef, Tauofik. This amazing program helps build community connections for members aged 55 and older through community lunches and BC Farmers Market coupons, while increasing access to healthy food for seniors and supporting local farmers and food producers!
