Special Bird Service Society

Special Bird Service Society Providing access to education, recreation & stewardship opportunities for our Global Majority & Q***r communities🍥

At the Special Bird Service Society we exist to hold space for one another, provide educational resources and challenge stereotypes by elevating the various diaspora of BIPOC & 2SLGBTQ+ community’s histories, voices and values, in nature. Through a decolonizing, anti-racism centred approach, we base our society’s actions on our commonly held principles of; ecological stewardship, mental health adv

ocacy, equitable access to education, as well as food justice and security advocacy. Through connection-forming, relationship building and generational knowledge transfer, we aim to normalize marginalized communities use of the great outdoors through providing access and education. Thereby reclaiming our connection and access to nature, as a recreational healing space, by offering organised bird watching walks, hikes, outdoor adventures and community, connection-building events.

We’ve built something together. Help us keep it going. Five years ago, Special Bird Service began with a simple belief:

Everyone deserves to see themselves in nature.

Since then, we’ve hosted 175+ nature-centred events and welcomed more than 6,000 people into spaces where we could connect with birds, the land, and one another.

There have been mornings filled with laughter & conversation. Quiet afternoons standing beneath trees for the only shade source for kilometres.
Long evenings strolling for owls, for Christmas bird count. First birds. New friends. Old friends. Questions asked. Stories shared. Moments of joy, wonder, grief, learning, listening and simply being.

None of that happened because of one person.

It happened because of all of us.

Right now, SBS is facing a funding gap unlike anything we’ve experienced before. We want to keep showing up for our communities this fall and winter—to keep creating local events where people can find connection, belonging in community and joy in the outdoors.

And we need your help!

If you’re able to donate, please consider making a contribution to SBS. Every dollar helps us keep our programming accessible and continue creating these spaces.

If you can’t give financially, there are so many other ways you can help:

a) Volunteer at an SBS event this fall or winter, or offer your skills, time, knowledge or connections. Email us [email protected] to join our WhatsApp volunteer group,

b) Share this post with someone who believes everyone belongs outside,

c) Come to an event and bring someone, a friend or family member who hasn’t joined us or been birding before,

d) Tell your friends, family and community about SBS. Word of mouth has always been our greatest strength as a community,

e) Show up. Listen. Participate. Help us build what comes next.

We have always been about existing in joy, learning and building community together.

So whether you can give $5, give five hours, reshare this post, volunteer at an upcoming event, or simply keep showing up—you are part of this now, as you always have been.

Five years. 175+ events. 6,000+ people connected. So many more birds, places, stories and people are still waiting to meet one another.

Help us keep gathering. Help us soar to new heights. Help us continue to hold space for people to see themselves in nature.

Donate. Volunteer. Share & show up🤎 See you outside🦅
