Vintage Vernon BC

Vintage Vernon BC Vernon has changed so much in a short amount of time. Post your photos here of old landmarks! A lot of us have raised/are raising our own families in this town.

Those of us lucky enough to have been born and raised in Vernon can really appreciate the changes our beautiful city has gone through. Here's a place we can take them to show them what they missed in the years gone by! Sidenote: I am not a historian or a scholar. I may mistakenly put up information that is incorrect. I reserve the right to be wrong. Please kindly correct me if I am. :)

If there

is anything that shouldn't be on here, please also kindly let me know. I cannot stop people from copying the pictures and posting them somewhere else.

Finding more history behind the walls of another room we're renovating had me over at Castanet counting windows and paces to see where things used to be. How cool is it that the exterior wall of the National Service Station and Capitol Taxi is still visible? Does anyone have any information on E. Palmer?

I was looking on Google Maps and found this memory! Right beside the bus station on 31st Avenue. This was the building that I grew up seeing Dr. Powter in.
It was demolished some years ago, and now this block is strictly the bus exchange for Vernon Transit.

B.C. Forest Service postcard from 1958. The back of the postcard reads "Manning Park Gallows" at "The Big Burn" on BC's Hope-Princeton Highway west of Allison Pass. The "Big Burn" of August 8 to 31, 1945 was caused by careless use of a cigarette or campfire and destroyed 5,920 acres (2,396 hectares) of forest. The paved highway was completed in 1950. Parks Branch records show that the original sign did not have the cigarette, and read "One camper made this 5000 acres look like Hell! Don't you be careless!" They had to replace it though, as "Hell" was pretty tough language in the early 1950's. And ultimately they just wanted to get their fire protection message across in a memorable way.

Remember that back then roughly 50 per cent of Canadian adults smoked (61 per cent of men and 38 per cent of women). As of 2011, that number dropped to 17 per cent. Canada's war on smoking started in 1963. That cultural shift came about largely because of a bombshell statement that Canada's Minister of National Health and Welfare, Judy LaMarsh, dropped in the House of Commons 63 years ago.

On June 17, 1963, Minister LaMarsh rose and declared: "There is scientific evidence that cigarette smoking is a contributory cause of lung cancer and that it may also be associated with chronic bronchitis and coronary heart disease."

I couldn't agree more with these sentiments

Over the past several weeks, communities across the Okanagan have faced the uncertainty and devastation of wildfires. Throughout it all, firefighters and emergency crews have worked tirelessly, often under incredibly difficult and dangerous conditions, to protect our homes, communities, and the people who live here.

To every firefighter, first responder, emergency worker, volunteer, and support crew who has spent long hours on the frontlines and behind the scenes: thank you.

We are deeply grateful for your dedication, your hard work, and the many hours you have given to helping keep our communities safe. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed.

In 1953, Bob and Dora Davison said “I do.” Today, 73 years later, they’re still celebrating that promise.
“Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:8

Happy 73rd Anniversary, Bob & Dora! What a beautiful legacy of love, faith and family. ❤️
