223 Red Lion RCACS

223 Red Lion RCACS 223 Red Lion Air Cadet Squadron is a youth organization open to Canadian youth, 12 to 18 years of age.

We offer opportunities and life skills that youth would not normally experience in other programs. For example, as an Air Cadet, you are eligible to earn a Transport Canada Glider Pilot and/or Private Pilot License. One of the premier aspects of the cadet program are the experiences gained in leadership, time management, self discipline, professionalism, team management and organizational skills.

Summer training or summer employment is a big part of being a cadet - cadets who apply and earn a spot, will attend one of the Cadet Training facilities in British Columbia or elsewhere in Canada. Cadets have the opportunity to earn credits towards high school graduation in Grade 10, 11 and 12. In addition to our regular training nights, 223 Squadron offers optional activities such as precision drill team, flight simulator training, marksmanship, biathlon, ground school, effective speaking, first aid training and military band.

Here’s our cadets playing “War” by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. You might recognize it as Caesar Flickerman’s entrance music from The Hunger Games!

If you’re 12 to 18, you can join 223 Red Lion Air Cadets for FREE and try things like:

🎺 band
✈️ aviation
🛩️ flying
🏕️ survival weekends
🎯 marksmanship
🦁 leadership and community events

No experience needed. No expectation to join Just show up, try new things, and have fun.

Cadets are not members of the Canadian Armed Forces and are not expected to join the military later. The program introduces them to Canadian military traditions and careers among many other options, but it is a youth development program, not a recruiting program.

✈️ What an outstanding day yesterday for the 223 Red Lion Cadets at Oliver!

We headed out for gliding and the day turned out even better than expected! ☀️
The cadets enjoyed smooth flights, beautiful views, and plenty of hands-on experience in the air. There was just one short pause due to a passing rain shower, but that didn’t dampen the spirits at all.
Huge thanks to the incredibly well-organized and action-oriented cadets who kept everything running so smoothly and efficiently. Your teamwork, enthusiasm, and positive attitude made the whole event a huge success!

So proud of every cadet who took part — everyone had a fantastic day and made some amazing memories. This is what cadet life is all about!

✈️ Guest Speaker Series ✈️

At 223 Red Lion, we’re committed to showing our cadets the many exciting career paths that build directly on the skills and experiences they gain in the Air Cadet program!
Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming back one of our own – a former 223 cadet who is now living his dream as a flight attendant with Air Canada!
He shared his inspiring personal journey from Air Cadets to the airline industry and gave our cadets valuable insights into what the job really involves.
The evening really came alive when he ran several hands-on scenarios with the cadets, including:
➡️Welcoming passengers on board and preparing the cabin for departure
➡️Working together as a crew to manage in-flight responsibilities
➡️Practicing emergency procedures during a simulated evacuation

The cadets had a fantastic time and left with a much clearer picture of the teamwork, leadership, communication, and composure required in aviation careers.

A huge thank you to our guest speaker Thomas Niedballa for taking the time to come back and inspire the next generation!

This past weekend, the 223 Red Lion Air Cadet Squadron headed out to the beautiful shores of Mabel Lake for our latest FTX (Field Training Exercise)!

What exactly is an FTX? For those who don’t know, an FTX is the ultimate classroom without walls. It is a dedicated weekend where our cadets step away from the squadron floor and head into the great outdoors to master survival skills, leadership, and teamwork in a real-world environment.

Learning in Action:
It wasn’t just about enjoying the scenery! Our cadets spent the weekend training and putting skills into real-world practice. Highlights of the training included:

🪢 Mastering Knots: Learning the essential hitches and bends needed for field rigging.
⛺ Hutche Building: Working together to construct sturdy, weather-resistant shelters from the ground up.
🔥 Fire Craft: Cadets learned to build and maintain a fire—a vital survival skill. Most importantly, they worked in shifts, taking turns keeping the fire going throughout the night to ensure the camp stayed warm and safe.
🥾 Hiking: Exploring the rugged terrain of Mabel Lake while building physical endurance and team morale.

A massive THANK YOU to the Vernon Gyro Club for hosting us at their fantastic location. Your support provides our youth with the perfect environment to build confidence and resilience that will last a lifetime.

Check out some of the highlights from the weekend below! 📸👇

Our very own Vernon Combined Cadet Band just achieved Second Place and Silver Standard this weekend at the BC Interior Cadet Band Competition! Did you know that this band didn't even exist 2 years ago? Wow!

Made up of cadets from our very own 223 Red Lion Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, 222 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron - Shuswap, 137 Sea Cadets Corps Kamloops and 63 RCSCC Kalamalka Sea Cadet Corps, they delivered an outstanding performance.

Led by Capt. Jason Paas of 1705 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, alongside Bandmaster Sgt. Payne and Drum Major Sgt. McDonnell, with special thanks to Sgt. Veres for stepping in as Drum Major last minute while his peers had to step away to mentor younger cadets at a training exercise.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the parents who travel each week from these surrounding communities to ensure their cadets can attend practices and performances.

This result reflects the *exceptional dedication*, leadership, and teamwork of every cadet and family involved.

We couldn’t be more proud of this group. Congratulations to all!
