Pony Pals Therapeutic Riding Association welcomed Kate the Great to their program in May 2024. She a wonderful addition, serving so gently, so lovingly and so safely, changing the lives of people with physical and cognitive disabilities for the better.

They were heartbroken when a sudden severe medical crisis meant that Kate needed the Last Act of Kindness. She had a profound impact on their program and everyone within it during her two years with them. She will be greatly missed by all those she served and those who served at her side.

URGENT‼️

We are urging all Canadians to contact the CFIA, their MP, the Minister of Agriculture and Prime Minister Carney to STOP 🚫 importing horses for slaughter.

Our good friends at Horse Plus Humane Society have documented how the horse slaughter pipeline is being used by cartels for drug and human trafficking. Now with a threat of screwworm it is more important than ever to stop the import of horses for Slaughter.

Horses are moved around the United States all the time and there is no way to definitively know that a horse has not come from the Texas area where the screw worm was detected. The only way to protect Canadian Agriculture and human health is to stop importing horses for Slaughter.

Roo was Fortunate to be Born in a Place of Safety ✨

His mother, Abbigale, was rescued from a kill buyer, after a hard life as a bucking pony and in wild pony races. Taken in by Hopeful Hooves Equine Rescue Society in Alberta, when she was examined by a vet it was discovered she was pregnant. Abbigale was estimated to be between 24-27 years of age. Pregnancy for such a senior horse is high risk. But with good nutrition and vet care, she was able to carry her baby to full term. Roo was born June 7, 2025 a healthy c**t.

Matteo's Good Fortune Came Later ⏳

Matteo and his mom Esme were also rescued in June 2025 from a kill buyer by Hopeful Hooves. She arrived scared and starved, her body giving it everything it had to nursing her new born foal. Estimated to be only 3 years old, Esme had already experienced enough to make her fearful and untrusting of humans. Under watchful care, they were both able to settle in, gain weight and their health.

An Incredibly Happy Ending for All 💕

In March 2026, Roo and Matteo were both gelded making them good citizens. Thanks to our generous supporters we were able to provide them with our Gelding Grant. No baby making for them! They will also have much better lives as geldings. That same month Matteo was adopted. Roo has taken on a very important job making rounds at hospitals bringing joy to many.

As for their moms, Abbigale will remain with Hopeful Hooves for the rest of her days as a sanctuary horse. She will only know safety, a full belly and love. Esme has been adopted with her friend Dakota to loving home where they will be able to live out their lives together.

We are so Grateful! 🙏

It is thanks to our generous supporters that we are able to assist rescue organizations like Hopeful Hooves with their incredible life saving work. We hope the work we are doing together fills your hearts as much as it does ours.

We never want to say "no" to a horse who needs us. Help us say "yes" and donate today. Thank you!

Investigations into the horse slaughter pipeline in the USA have uncovered how cartels have been using the transport of horses as a cover for drug and human trafficking.

As if that wasn't horrific enough, now screw worm has been detected in the USA posing a serious threat to agriculture and human health.

We urge you to watch this information video to learn more about all aspects of the criminal underbelly of the slaughter pipeline and just exactly why screw worm is such a threat.

The best way to protect Canadian agriculture and human health is to ban horse slaughter completely.

🚨 URGENT: HORSE CRISIS IN PROGRESS SOUTH OF THE BOARDER!🚨

A massive, unprecedented bottleneck has just hit the horse slaughter pipeline. Screw worm, a deadly parasite that threatening the cattle industry and human health, has just been detected in the USA. As a result, all horse exports into Mexico have been completely halted. In addition, Canada has put strict bans in place on bringing horses in from the U.S.

It is estimated that approximately 2,000 horses are currently trapped in the U.S. slaughter pipeline at any given time, with 200 to 500 horses exported weekly from a variety of locations, auctions, feedlots, and kill buyers. Because these horses can no longer be exported, kill buyers are currently stuck holding them and facing massive feed bills for animals that now have nowhere to go.

NOW IS THE TIME TO SAVE THEM ALL! 🐴

There is a fleeting window of opportunity to save hundreds of lives. Rescues across the United States are rallying to execute a massive, coordinated June Buyout direct from the kill buyers. If rescues everywhere band together, these vulnerable horses can be absorbed into safety. The kill buyers will take a financial hit, but they will take the offer because it's cheaper than feeding them indefinitely.

We urge you to consider donating to a reputable horse rescue in the USA. Our preferred organization is Horse Plus Humane Society but there are others.

We will keep you posted with any updates. Thank you!

TEMPORARY BAN HAS HALTED IMPORTS OF HORSES FROM THE USA 🛑❌🐴

Screw worm has been detected which poses a serious threat to agriculture and humans. To stop the spread of this deadly parasite, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced a temporary ban on the importing of livestock, including horses, from Texas. Mexico has implemented a similar ban.

It is time to end horse slaughter in Canada. It is a dying industry with weak regulations and horrific cruelty. Now with the threat of screw worm, the urgency is about protecting our own agricultural industries and human health.

Please read the post below and write to your MP and Prime Minister Carney urging them to end horse slaughter in Canada. 🇨🇦

One Federally-Licensed Horse Slaughter Plant Left Standing: How Long is Viandes Richelieu Likely to Last?

With the permanent closure of Bouvry Exports, advocates are calling for a complete end to the equine slaughter industry in Canada. Viandes Richelieu in Massueville, Quebec, is still operating and even accepting horses from the U.S. for immediate slaughter.

In fact, StatsCan data reveals that 3,698 horses were imported for slaughter in 2025 from Pennsylvania, Michigan, Iowa and Maine. These horses were transported straight to Viandes Richelieu and have since entered the food supply.

An emerging health concern is the issue of a rising incidence of diphtheria in horses in the U.S. Numerous positive cases have been confirmed via laboratory testing and we fear that diseased animals could be making their way north, to be butchered in Canada (https://horseplus.org/historic-breakthrough-we-are-closer-than-ever-to-ending-horse-slaughter-for-good/).

Further, the U.S. Equestrian Federation has raised the alarm about screwworm having been confirmed recently south of our border. Their press release states: “Widespread screwworm infestation could have serious consequences for animal health, agriculture productivity, and the national economy (https://equinediseasecc.org/news/article/ALERT-Screwworm-Confirmed-in-the-United-State)”. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced a temporary ban on livestock, including horses, from Texas.: https://www.canada.ca/en/food-inspection-agency/news/2026/06/the-canadian-food-inspection-agency-implements-disease-control-measures-to-prevent-spread-of-new-world-screwworm.html?fbclid=IwY2xjawST20pleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETF3WmNlSjFJM0JaRXF4UUpac3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHm_JWGKoSOU2n43wSa6mdnxAEJq0dsGJG_EsAfaQWb2rSgrzBoAlJOBxC72L_aem_S34rx77ePCnMgwCOYrUopw

Horse slaughter must end, on both sides of the border, for the sake of animal welfare and human health.

There is no better time than today to inform the federal government that horses should not be imported from the U.S. for slaughter. Consider these reasons:

• The vast majority of citizens polled in both Canada and the U.S. are opposed to the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

• It has been a long-standing concern that most horses, during their lifetimes, have been treated with drugs that are banned from the food chain (e.g. phenylbutazone, a common anti-inflammatory). This is because horses are not traditionally raised as food animals.

• Diphtheria and screwworm cases in U.S. horses are on the rise. Canada must remain vigilant and not allow disease to enter our country.

• The horse slaughter pipeline creates loopholes exploited for drug smuggling, human trafficking, and money laundering. Stopping these imports tightens oversight, reduces cross-border vulnerabilities, and disrupts hidden criminal networks. See more here: https://horseplus.org/historic-breakthrough-we-are-closer-than-ever-to-ending-horse-slaughter-for-good/.

• Now, with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s efforts to decrease Canada’s reliance on trade with the U.S., it makes sense to stop U.S. horse imports for slaughter – a trade worth less than $3 million to the Canadian economy and one whose reputation is inherently stained. Promotion of the vibrant “live” horse industry, on the other hand, remains well-accepted and generates billions of dollars of revenue in Canada.

🐴What can you do to help end this ruthless, predatory trade that causes suffering to horses and puts the health of humans at risk? Contact the very people who hold the keys to progress in their hands!

Core call to action:
Ask our government leaders to ban the imports of horses for slaughter to protect Canadian animals, public health, agriculture, and borders. This is not just about compassion — it’s smart risk management for our country.

With the closure of the Bouvry slaughter plant in Alberta, some are wondering what will happen to all the unwanted horses.

Pro-slaughter voices would want you to believe that there will now be a deluge of unwanted horses with nowhere to go and will be abandoned. That thinking is meant to scare us into keeping the industry going.

The truth is horse slaughter has been in decline in Canada for quite some time. The closure of the Alberta Bouvry plant is proof that it is no longer a financially viable business. It wasn't closed due to changes in law or regulations. It was closed because the demand for horse meat has declined. If a business can no longer sell its product it goes out of business.

But we can't ignore the current economic struggles Canadians are all facing. The fallout of that inevitably means people have to make hard choices and that often impacts their animals. Cat and dog rescues have seen it before. People surrendering their pets because they can no longer afford to keep them. It happens with horses too.

But there is help and horses do not have to pay the price of their owners misfortunes.

If you or someone you know has a horse that needs a new home, please reach out to the horse community for help. There are many equine groups on social media. Please also reach out to your local rescue. They are often at capacity but they will always try to be of assistance.

And if your horse needs the Last Act of Kindness, please apply for our Humane Euthanasia Grant. Taking your horse to auction is risking that they will be sold into the slaughter pipeline. Horses are being shipped from the west to the slaughter facility in Quebec. It is no way for a horse to spend its last days.

We never want to say "no" to a horse who needs us. Help us say "yes" and donate today. Thank you!

Where will all the horses go?

Now that Bouvry Exports has officially closed, some members of the public have expressed concerns regarding the fate of horses no longer facing death in the western facility.

I DID IT! 📣

Today I had a meeting with my MP, Stephen Fuhr, to discuss ending the live export of horses for slaughter. 🐴

As Secretary of State, Defence Procurement, he has a very busy and demanding role, particularly in today's changing times. But he recognizes that the issues that matter to his constituents are important too.

He has promised to raise the issue with both the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture. I look forward to updates.

If you haven't done so already, please reach out to your MP to do the same. Find your Member of Parliament by entering your postal code here: https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en

ALSO ‼️ There is a new petition you can take to your MP. Only 25 signatures are required per petition and your MP will present it on your behalf in the House of Commons. Please do it for the horses! The petition can be downloaded here https://bit.ly/4tURTqm and printed.
