Here are 5 ways to make your communication more accessible:

Understanding mental health is part of health literacy.💚

October 10 is World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme, "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” reminds us to listen to people’s experiences and make space for understanding and support.

According to a report from Mental Health Research Canada, more than 1 in 10 Canadians believe that people with mental health conditions don’t try hard enough to get better. (Source: Understanding Mental Health Literacy in Canadians: A 2023 Update)

We can challenge these harmful myths. Mental health literacy helps us build understanding, reduce stigma, and create more supportive communities.

🍎Food, health, and who we are.

In honour of Health Literacy Month, Dan chats with Maude Perreault, a registered dietitian, researcher, and assistant professor at the Université de Montréal, about how our budgets, emotions, values, and life stage shape the food choices we make. What does food literacy look like in everyday life, and how can it benefit us? Maude and Dan unpack it all!

We’re also joined by Jennifer Johnson, Executive Director of CHSSN Community Health and Social Services Network, to explore health literacy, the importance of accessible health and social services for English-speaking communities across Quebec, and what’s ahead for the organization.

Everyone deserves health information they can understand.

For many older adults, understanding health information can be a challenge. 88% of seniors in Canada experience low health literacy, which can make it harder to find, understand, and use health information to make informed decisions.

The good news? Support is available.

🩺October is Health Literacy Month, a reminder of how health literacy helps us navigate everyday life, from understanding medication instructions to booking doctor's appointments and reading food labels.

According to the Canadian Public Health Association, more than 60% of Canadian adults have low health literacy, which can make it harder to find, understand, and use health information.

The good news? Support is available. 💙

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.🧡

Today, we remember the children who were lost to the residential school system. We honour survivors, their families, and First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities who continue to live with the effects of this painful history.

Today, and every day, is a time to listen, learn, remember, and reflect on how we can work toward a better future.
