We’re keeping Black History Month going with another talented change-maker ✊🏾

Salome Bey (1933-2020) was an extremely talented Jazz musician in Canada.

Originally born in New Jersey, Salome and her siblings grew up as the vocal group, “Andy and the Bey Sisters,” performing in various jazz clubs. She would later move to Toronto, Canada in 1964 to continue her acting and singing career, starring on Broadway, T.V shows, and fellow jazz musician Horace Silver’s albums 🎼

Most importantly, Salome Bey is credited with paving the way for female artists in Canada. Her work and breaking down barriers for women led her to be inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2021.

Oscar Peterson (1915-2007) laid the groundwork for jazz in Canada while becoming one of the Greatest jazz pianists to ever live.

Oscar Peterson began learning piano from his self-taught pianist father, Daniel Peterson. He would later take classical piano lessons from his older sister, Daisy Peterson Sweeney, who was a piano teacher in Montreal.

His daily practice would pay off, amounting Peterson to become one of the best jazz pianists of all time, winning eight Grammy Awards for his soulfully smooth work🏆

Throughout his career, he appeared on over 200 albums, including Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong, creating a legacy for Canadian music.

Fun Fact: Oscar Peterson’s preferred piano was the Austrian made “Bösendorfer Concert Grand 290 Imperial.” 🎹

Here at Black Music Canada, it’s important that we reflect on some of the most influential artists who paved the way for Canadian music.

For the first week of Black History Month, we wanted to highlight a Black Canadian musician who’s shaped our music of today.

Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was an extremely talented piano and organ player, and he was one of the first artists from Canada to be recognized in America for his work.

His talents began in Canada, where he’d initially learn to play piano by ear, watching his brothers take lessons from his mother.

As he grew older, Dett moved to New York where he would continue studying and make his way to Harvard University. From there, Dett would later become a leading figure in the National Association of Negro Musicians, the oldest organization in the U.S.A dedicated to preserving Black American music.

Though he spent most of his career in America, R. Nathaniel Dett owed his artistry to his family’s Canadian roots.

Dett played a vital role in breaking down barriers for Black artists, and without his contribution, the Canadian music scene would not be where it is today.

If you’re looking for a fantastic brand-new artist to have bragging rights over discovering first when they inevitably blow up - look no further than Canadian R&B and soul artist Naja, who recently made her debut in the music scene with her single “Stay.”

“Stay” is an incredible start to Naja’s career. The song begins with a slow and relaxing tempo accompanied by a beautiful instrumental pattern, soon taken over by Naja’s compelling and beautiful vocals. As the song continues, we are introduced to stacked harmonies, which add depth to the listening experience and create a powerful “out-of-body” emotion.

“Stay” was also mixed and produced by Canadian record producer Akeel Henry, who has worked with critically acclaimed artists like Megan Thee Stallion, 21 Savage, and more.

We have to admit, “Stay” is one of the most impressive debut songs we have ever heard. Become a day one fan and check out Naja, as “Stay” is available now on all streaming platforms.

Happy New Year folks! 🥳

Black Music Canada is BACK with 2025 predictions for the music industry 👀💭

1. Country Music 🤠

Country music’s popularity and influence have become more apparent over the last couple of years. With Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter” album reaching chart-topping status during its release, other popular Black artists like Lil Durk, Moneybagg Yo, and Toronto’s very own Lil Berete have similarly dipped their toes into the Western genre, leaving us interested to see who else hops on the country craze in the upcoming year.

2. Experimentation 🌀
We think experimentation is essential for any artist to stand out in an industry of oversaturation and conformity. In 2025, we expect to see a lot more genre-blending in music. This year, when big-name Canadian artists like Drake, The Weeknd, and Kaytranada were blending different genres into unique sounds, it’s likely this trend could trickle down and influence more diversification across the entire industry.

3. Niche Artists 🎶
Lastly, we at Black Music Canada predict that public appeal will continue to shift further away from mainstream music. Let’s face it, music is an infinite pool that’s only getting deeper and deeper. As newfound talent springs up with every passing moment, it becomes increasingly likely your new favourite artist is one that others have never heard of. And we fully embrace this change. When phenomenal underrated Black Canadian artists like Insyt., Thelonious, and many others fly under the mainstream radar, we’re excited to see lesser-known talent finally get the recognition they deserve.

Those are our predictions for the world of music in 2025, but what are YOURS? Let us know in the comments below!

Here at Black Music Canada, we love celebrating Black artists (It’s kinda what we do). As the year draws to a close, it’s time to share our top five artists we believe made the biggest impact in 2024 🎉

1️⃣ Drake
It wouldn’t be a list of top Canadian artists without mentioning the 6ix God himself. While Drake’s releases may have been more infrequent, his vast catalogue this year alone cements his position at the top of the Canadian music food chain. From his heated lyrical feud with Kendrick Lamar to his “100 Gigs” vault release; Drake’s relentlessness in music has earned him a spot at the top of our list.

2️⃣ Kaytranada
Kaytranada has proven time and time again that he has well earned his spot on our top five list, and as a certified legend in the genre of electronic music. With his release of “TIMELESS” back in June, the Montreal artist gave fans an album that – like fine wine – will age gracefully.

3️⃣ Mustafa
Mustafa exudes profound messages of love, loss, and identity through his harmonious and deeply impactful music. His September album release, “Dunya,” dives deeper into the artist himself and explores his personal growth; particularly in songs like “Name of God” and “Leaving Toronto.”

4️⃣ TOBi
TOBi has kept his reputation rather lowkey since he emerged back in 2016. Yet, we feel like he prefers it that way. The New Brunswick artist continues to display an authenticity unparalleled by other artists, keeping the momentum of his career going with nine released singles this year alone, including standout hits like “Forgot We Were Seeds” and “Ego Slide.”

5️⃣ Sadboi
Sadboi emerged onto the Toronto rap scene and quickly established herself as a powerful female artist with a “take no prisoners” energy. With countless standout releases, from “Fashion Week” to “Baddies,” the former Adidas and Savage X Fenty model has laid the groundwork for a successful music career in the years to come.

🇨🇦⭐️There you have our top five list of standout Canadian Black artists ⭐️🇨🇦

What are your thoughts? Are there any artists we missed out on? Let us know in the comments! ⬇️
