Presenting our new Banner & Booth at the Saik'uz First Nation Fishing Derby, May 15th, Long Weekend

The Nulki-Tachick Lakes Stewardship Society, NTLSS , in partnership with Saik'uz First Nation, SFN, continues to make progress towards addressing the increasing macrophyte (w**d) and algae growth on Nulki and Tachick Lakes , which has become a major concern. If no action is taken, both lakes will eventually be choked by "out of control w**d and algae growth," which will result in the unnecessary deaths of aquatic species, including Rainbow Trout and Burbot , within this ecosystem.

Decades of poor land and water management have produced the lake conditions we are now experiencing. Changes in attitudes, including improved management practices, combined with our annual harvest initiative, will allow our communities to accomplish the end goal of improved water quality and a healthier ecosystem in both lakes.

Funds were raised to complete a Macrophyte Feasibility Study 2024/2025 which provided scientific evidence to support our overall initiative and we have subsequently received the necessary approvals and permits from the Ministry of Water, Lands and Resources Stewardship, BC, WLRS; Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, DFO and Saik'uz First Nation, SFN to proceed with annual macrophyte harvests in the future to control w**d and algae growth. We have also drafted a preliminary Environmental Management Plan, which outlines the harvesting project and process.

A Macrophyte Harvester, including the necessary equipment, will require a substantial investment. NTLSS and SFN will be undertaking a major fundraising campaign in the coming weeks. To save both lakes, we need our community members to get behind this project. You can support this initiative by becoming a member. Membership form on the website: ntlss.ca . You can also donate, small or large.
We thank everyone for their consideration.

We know there are several historical events, camping and fishing trips that have taken place at Nulki and Tachick Lakes over the decades, so we are asking all persons who would like to share a story or some pictures of a campout, a day fishing "The Big One", we would love to hear from you.

Thank you in advance for sharing.

Please share stories or pictures via our email address: [email protected]

NTLSS update and call for volunteers and Director consideration

To all our valued members and friends of Nulki-Tachick Lakes Stewardship Society,

For your information, our society has achieved the necessary approvals and permits from the Ministry of Water, Lands and Resources Stewardship (WLRS); Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and Saik'uz First Nation (SFN), allowing us to proceed with macrophyte (w**d) harvests on Nulki and Tachick Lakes in the near future. This is a huge accomplishment with a larger challenge ahead of us.

Before we can proceed with harvests, we must raise the necessary funds to purchase and operate a Macrophyte Harvester with a trailer. Your NTLSS Board of Directors have investigated equipment options which includes purchasing used (if available) and new equipment. Purchase price for needed equipment will range up to $350,000 plus annual operation, maintenance and insurance costs.

We also need to secure launch and landing points on both lakes as well as storage sites for harvested material where there is no possibility of runoff back into either lake or their tributaries. A depleted gravel pit in the area could be considered. We encourage landowners with large sections of land and easy access to contact us and provide their consideration in support of our initiative. Please note, each harvest contains high levels of nutrients that could be considered as a valuable natural fertilizer for future hay crops or gardens. We are looking into marketing possibilities for these harvests.

As you can ascertain, our society is faced with a huge challenge requiring more individuals to get involved. We will have to establish several committees that will be responsible for bringing our initiative to fruition with fundraising being the biggest challenge.

We will be announcing our Annual General Meeting (AGM) date in the coming weeks and would like everyone to consider a Director position or Committee Lead. To be inclusive, it is imperative that our board include individuals from Saik'uz First Nation, the farm and ranching community, residents living around Nulki and Tachick Lakes, and members with a legal and accounting background.

Please give serious consideration to getting involved for the following reasons.
Control excessive w**d and algae growth on Nulki and Tachick Lakes
Minimize or eliminate algae growth containing toxic cyanobacteria
Remove the fear of our domestic pets and farm animals entering toxic waters
Healthier lakes and tributaries for all aquatic species
Provide both lakes the opportunity to be considered as locations to safely recreate and observe wildlife
Enhance efforts to improve and protect land values in this watershed
Thank you in advance for your interest and consideration.

Please respond to: [email protected]

Re: Letter of support for a NEEF application:

To whom it may concern,
The Nulki-Tachick Lakes Stewardship Society (NTLSS) is writing to express its full support of an application to Nechako Environmental Enhancement Fund (NEEF) for a new phase of integrated watershed research led by UNBC's Integrated Watershed Research Group (IWRG).
As stewards within the Stony Creek watershed, which feeds the Nechako River, we constantly monitor the basin's water supply and quality. We are particularly interested in understanding how climate change and human interventions may be affecting the Stony Creek watershed and its two primary water bodies, namely Nulki Lake and Tachick Lake. In particular, rising air temperatures tied to climate change have led in recent years to an extended drought, low water levels and high-water temperatures in this watershed. Conversely, pulses of water associated with extreme weather phenomena such as atmospheric rivers also influence sediment and chemical (e.g., nutrients, carbon, and contaminants) fluxes into Nulki and Tachick Lakes, with potential deleterious impacts on water quality. Acquiring baseline information in the Nechako Canyon and surrounding regions, including hydro meteorological conditions, water and sediment quality, and fish abundance will assist NTLSS better understand the larger system and how wetting the Nechako Canyon may impact nearby regions such as the Stony Creek basin.
Over the past few years, the IWRG at UNBC has worked in partnership with the NTLSS and local community to better understand how climate change influences the long-term water security, health and well-being of the Nechako Watershed. This partnership has included the deployment of a comprehensive weather station at Nulki Lake in the spring of 2024 that is now providing critical data to understand environmental impacts on lake conditions. Deployment of this new weather station was supported in part by NEEF through IWRG's third phase of integrated watershed research in the Nechako Watershed. The NTLSS firmly believes that it is especially important to continue supporting such monitoring efforts and assemble as much knowledge as possible when forming risk assessments and preparing for future hydroclimate extremes.
We are therefore delighted to support the NEEF application involving the IWRG that would lead to a fourth phase of integrated watershed research in the Nechako Watershed. This would provide critical data to support maintaining the weather station recently deployed at Nulki Lake. It will also allow for additional research analyses based on this data which would be shared with NTLSS and the community.
The new funding may also allow the weather station to be equipped with telemetry to provide real-time meteorological conditions for the community. Finally, this new research project will invigorate the partnership between the Nulki-Tachick Lakes Stewardship Society, the IWRG and UNBC while benefiting the local community. Thus, we highly recommend that NEEF fully support this application for the betterment of not only our Society and community, but also for all the Nechako Watershed and beyond.
Sincerely,
Ray Klingspohn
Vice-Chair, NTLSS

To whom it may concern at Northern Health,

This advisory is sent to your attention in the best interest of public and animal health and safety.

Please note that Nulki Lake has experienced the worst macrophyte (w**d) growth ever, especially on the South side of the lake. The heavy growth can be noticed from the West and East ends across the entire lake out from the shoreline approximately 200 meters. The heavy growth is preventing any wave action and allowing large masses of algal blooms to collect that also contain noticeable cyanobacteria (blue-green, turquoise) formations. On calm days with no winds, there is a pungent smell as well, which is not pleasant. Please see attached photos.

The fact there is cyanobacteria present poses a major health and safety risk to humans and animals (pet and farm). We are recommending that the public not recreate on this lake at this time and to prevent their animals from entering or drinking the water.

We have attempted to submit the same notification to ALGAE WATCH BC to ensure both local and provincial government agencies have been alerted.
