Great work party last Wednesday! 🐈
Got a bed prepared for our brassicas and some weeding done in our borders. A good harvest of overwintered greens as well.

We have an opening of warm dry weather this week, so it’s perfect timing to get some of our cool weather veggies in. Trays of lettuce blends, collards, kale cabbage and komatsuna have been patiently waiting out our cold snap in the greenhouse to be planted!

Overnight temps are looking like they’ll be above 10 degrees for a few nights here, which is usually what we look for to plant crops like basil and tomatoes. Should you plant your tomatoes? Nope, absolutely not. We’re still firmly in cool weather crop time at the coast and will be for at least another few weeks so they should stay somewhere consistently warm.

✅Hot tip: add some dolomite lime to your brassica beds, they love calcium and high pH! This is also a good measure to treat and prevent club root.

What a beautiful day for our first April guided work party! 🧚 🍇

So nice to see so many familiar faces in the sunshine! We made the most of the stretch of dry weather to start preparing beds for our first spring plantings, things like kale, collards, leeks and shallots that thrive in the cooler spring weather we’re still getting. It’s always hard to find days where it’s dry enough to work the soil this time of year, so you have to take your opportunities when you get them! We got to do a bit of gentle cleanup and weeding as well, being mindful of all of the creatures we share our garden with that could be overwintering in stems, leaves and soil. They are like fairies, you don’t always see them but you have to believe they are there 🧚

Another task this day was to prune the grape vine. (We forgot!). Although it’s better to do this earlier it still wasn’t too late, so I we got it a bit more under control, taking new branches down to one or two buds. Grapes grow an enormous amount each year, so it you have them trained on a small space this is important to do each year if you want to get good quality fruit, and you don’t want the vine to take over your entire house! If you haven’t pruner your grape yet, it’s still not too late, but once we get warmer days the sap starts flowing so try to do it soon! 🍇

Spring Work Parties are up on our calendar! This week we harvested some amazing spring treasures, including radicchio, corn salad and purple sprouting broccoli. If you planted kale or other brassicas last year, they’re currently getting ready to flower by sending up the most delicious, sweet and tender flower spikes! These are better than broccoli and packed with vitamins and minerals, so don’t let them go to waste! If you harvest the main shoot, several more will develop that you can keep harvesting into the spring! Generally if it snaps off by hand it’s tender enough to eat, but don’t miss the first one or you’re missing out on many more!
