*Introducing acclaimed violinist Sruti Sarathy, featured alongside T.M. Krishna at Manodharma: A Carnatic Vocal Concert.*
Sruti Sarathy is an accomplished Carnatic violinist, vocalist, and composer based in the Bay Area, California.
Sruti began her musical training as a prodigious three-year old. Trained under Guru Anuradha Sridhar in the esteemed Lalgudi lineage, she masterfully balances classical South Indian music with contemporary themes. An acclaimed accompanist and soloist, she has received multiple "Best Violinist" awards from the prestigious Madras Music Academy, and has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship.
A graduate of Stanford University, Sruti's musical work explores new social justice narratives through self-experiments and collaborative ensembles.
She has also trained in Hindustani music under violin maestro Kala Ramnath. Sruti co-leads Unfretted, an Indian strings duet concept with chitravina player, Vishaal Sapuram. She is also the creator & lead composer of the project Songs for Many Lives.
Manodharma, the art of creating music in the moment, offers us a glimpse into the inner world of the performer. Through this process, the artist creates an edifice that dies in that very instant, yet lives forever within it. In this concert, Krishna invites us into those moments of creation as he traverses the landscapes of rฤgam and tฤlam alongside co-artists Rajna Swaminathan on mridangam and Sruti Sarathy on violin.
This program is presented by the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver, and is funded in part by the Vancouver Civic Theatre and City of Vancouver's Theatre Rental Grant & Vancouver Foundation's LEVEL BIPOC Grant, with support from the Centre for India and South Asia Research, House of Indian Dance, and Time Will Tell Arts Society.
