Investing in recreation and parks means investing in healthier futures for British Columbians.

Today, BCRPA CEO, Katie Fenn, brought that message directly to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services in Victoria, presenting BCRPA's three key recommendations for BC Budget 2027 on behalf of our 7,800 recreation, parks, and fitness professionals.

Thank you to the committee for the opportunity to highlight the essential role of municipal social infrastructure, coordinated workforce investments, and intergenerational active living programming.

We're thankful for the opportunity to advocate for our diverse sector and the communities it serves across BC.

Today marks the beginning of National Indigenous History Month ( ).

Now’s the time to continue your reconciliation journey through reflection, learning, and action. NIHM invites us all to honour the history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, as well as recognize and celebrate the achievements and enduring contributions of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on and stewarded this land since time immemorial.

National Indigenous Physical Activity Awareness Week (NIPAAW) starts on June 14 and continues until National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21.

At BCRPA, we are committed to learning and unlearning together — honouring diverse knowledge systems and ways of being in all that we do.

To help support this, we’ve compiled a list of reconciliation resources related to recreation and parks work: https://www.bcrpa.bc.ca/news/national-indigenous-history-month/

What if one of the most inclusive sports isn’t what you’d expect? 🥏

Ultimate Spirit, an Indigenous-focused initiative delivered by BC Ultimate Society, is demonstrating how recreation can strengthen relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities across British Columbia through the unique culture of ultimate frisbee — a self-refereed sport rooted in respect, communication, and shared accountability.

From translating game signals into traditional languages to building relationships between schools and university athletes, this story is a powerful example of how recreation and sport can inspire social change.
