We are so excited to have Filipino farmer / peasant organizer and advocate, Danilo “Ka Daning” Ramos, visiting Vancouver as part of a Canada-wide speaking tour to shed light on the current human rights situation in the Philippines, and share first-hand experiences from the Filipino farmworkers movement. The tour comes amid growing concern over the impact of militarization and foreign backed security agreements such as the Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SoVFA) signed between Canada and the Philippines.

Join us on Tuesday, May 19th from 6-9 pm at UBC Vancouver campus (Register for venue details!) and on Zoom! Ticket link in bio or at tinyurl.com/KDMay19YVR

💌 April 7th marks National Caregiver Day 💌

Canada’s Caregiver Program employs mostly racialized women from the global south, and about 90% of migrant caregivers in Canada have come from the Philippines.

GABRIELA BC calls on Filipino women and allies to fight for the rights and welfare of caregivers, to keep their eyes on the changing programs and policies regarding Canada’s Caregiver Program, and to push back against the Bill C-12 that provides mass cancellation powers over immigration permits and increases in surveillance.

We also demand that the Marcos regime end the Labour Export Program, which forces 7-8000 Filipinos to leave the country each day and work in foreign countries like Canada, while neglecting the needs of the Filipino people at home and while widespread corruption continues.

GABRIELA BC celebrates the acquittal of peasant organizer, Amanda Echanis.

She was illegally arrested in December 2020 alongside her 1-month old baby, and was imprisoned for a little over five years. The Tuguegarao Regional Trial Court Branch failed to establish all necessary elements of illegal possession of fi****ms and explosives charges and acquitted Echanis on January 14. After being detained on false and politically driven charges, her release is long overdue.

Echanis continued to publish her writings and pursued her studies at the University of the Philippines Diliman despite being targeted by the state. Like other victims of wrongful prosecutions, Echanis should not have been imprisoned and separated from her child for five years. Activists who choose to serve peasant communities should not live in fear of getting harassed, criminalized, and jailed. As long as the state continues to weaponize the justice system against artists, community organizers, and human rights defenders, state terror and abuses will continue.

Although we acknowledge the release of Amanda Echanis as a victory, we must continue to fight to free all political prisoners and demand for the release of Chantal Anicoche from the custody of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. We call on Filipino women and the LGBTQ+ community in BC to stand with activists and communities being silenced by the fascist state.

Abante Babae, Palaban Militante!
