📢 ICYMI: GABRIELA BC alongside allied BAYAN organizations held a cultural rally last month to commemorate 54 years since the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines. Members of GABRIELA BC recited the poem, “Documentary of a War,” by Lorena Barros, the founder of MAKIBAKA, the first national democratic organization of women who resisted the Marcos Sr dictatorship and carried forward the struggle against imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucrat capitalism.

GABRIELA BC members also created a powerful art piece that shows Imelda Marcos holding a rosary as she and her husband stand atop the masses and a pile of bones - a powerful depiction of how the Marcoses lived in luxury as the Filipino people were crushed under the weight of their greed and corruption.

We condemn the current Marcos regime as they continue their historical legacy of bowing down to US and foreign capitalist interests at the cost of Filipino families. We demand an end to this cycle of abuse and neglect, and we will continue to organize alongside the most oppressed in the struggle for national liberation. Just as Lorena Barros said in her poem, we declare: Imperialist evil shall not prevail! ✊🏽

📢 ICYMI: GABRIELA BC along with BAYAN BC, FAN (Full Accountability Now), Migrante BC, and Anakbayan BC held a press conference for the 54th commemoration of Martial Law.

Martial law was the beginning of a new kind of collective trauma that impacts all our kababayan today. When Marcos Sr enacted Martial law 54 years ago, from 1972 to 1981, he dictated that the Philippine State and military saw the Filipino people as the enemy to suppress. They were serving and protecting the Kurakot, the corrupt, but not the people. It was the collective power of the people that ultimately ended his dictatorship in 1986 during the People Power Revolution.

Martial law was a period of extreme suffering for the people – poverty worsened significantly as prices skyrocketed and there was no work to be found. Hundreds of thousands of children were malnourished and anyone who dared to speak out against these worsening conditions were jailed, disappeared, or killed. Today there are over 100 women political prisoners and activists are targeted daily, all while the corrupt walk free.

Years later, these same conditions continue to push Filipino workers out of the country, many of whom are women and LGBTQ+. They drain their savings to go abroad and spend years separated from their families while they care for the most vulnerable in their host countries.

It is no wonder that Filipina women and LGBTQ+ have been at the forefront of organizing. We see nuns, teachers, mothers, and more, standing up against oppression.

Through our remembrance, we stand together with those lost and survivors who continue to fight for justice. With GABRIELA BC, we honour the role of women and LGBTQ+ people as central forces in the resistance against fascism and tyranny.
